I finally was able to calm down. Popescu instantly realized the significance of the conversation, and didn't reveal a thing. "I like his style. He is a clever businessman," I thought to myself.

A short time later Dorina reported to me that Popescu had dropped out of the deal. I told her how sorry I was, after all, I was also a loser. I didn't think she was involved in the sting; they used her as bait to catch bigger fish, but in the end they didn't succeed.

Thoughts of Oana's bizarre departure gave me no respite. I postponed my trip in order to clarify what had happened that made her act this way. All attempts to contact her were useless. She didn't answer her phone and in the end she turned it off completely.

I went to several brokers and gave them the details and the prices of my remaining apartments. I also gave them my phone number and Giorgina's phone number.

I bought a ticket to return home the day after tomorrow.

That evening I called Angelo and asked him if he wanted to get together. He waited for me at Piccola Napoli and from there we went to his favorite pub not far from the pizzeria.

"So are you getting married in July?" I asked him.

"Yes, but we're not planning an extravagant wedding. We're getting married in a civil ceremony at City Hall, and perhaps one day we will get married in a church," he answered.

"Is anybody invited? What about Giulia?" I asked.

"No," he answered. "Everyone has bad memories about Bucharest and nobody is interested in coming here to celebrate. Perhaps in the future things will change."

"One must respect these feelings," I commented.

"And when," I asked, "is Rosanna due?"

"In the autumn; I think in October," he replied.

"So that's it, no more trips together. It's all over," I said.

"That's right, it's all over. It's a shame that it had to end this way. It could have ended differently and on a happier note," Angelo said.
