Once I was back at the benches, I exhaled heavily. I couldn't believe I had done that. To an alpha no less. If I had done that to my pack's alpha, it would have seemed like a challenge and I would most probably be killed.
But I had no regrets, helping that family was the right thing to do. I turned around and peered into the direction of the forest where the confrontation was held but saw that the two men were gone.
"Hey there you are! Ready to go?" I almost jumped from Will's voice and I looked up to see him smiling at me. I nodded and shrugged, "Yeah. Sure." I stood up and Will wrapped his arm around me and kissed my head, "Thanks for being so patient Syd. I'll make it up to you."
Having his arms around me and with that small gesture of affection just cleared away all of my doubts about us. "Yeah. It's fine. I love you Will and I understand, its your duty."
Will sighed relief and he stopped us in the middle of the walkway, not that was anyone to block considering that it was quite late by now. "I love you Syd." He pressed his lips against mine before pulling away. I smiled up at him and he intertwined our hands and we walked off to the inn that we staying in.
What I missed the entire time was a pair of grey-ish silver eyes watching us.
Sydney Carrington's POV
Today is the day. The day that I would be tied to Will for the rest of my life. I held Will's hand excitedly as we arrived at the ceremonial grounds together.
The other members of the pack followed behind and I could feel the excitement in the air.
Looking around, it was clear that the Alpha King was here due to the many soldiers and guards. I looked up at Will and a small smile graced my lips. Will looked incredibly handsome today with his white dress shirt and black pants.
I smoothed down my white dress and we walked to the designated area for our pack. The entire season lasted for a week and today was the first day.
Wolves had to put their names on a register and the pair who was going to be mated would have their names called out and together, they would make their way to the altar where they would say their vows and drink a potion where their souls would be bound together for the rest of eternity.
The pair would be seated separately and only be reunited at the altar. This represented the action of two souls lost before meeting each other but becoming one when they met. Some thought it was silly but I thought it was beautiful.
Alphas and betas who registered to take part in the ceremony were to be bound to their chosen mate first as a sign of power and respect. After, the rest of wolves were to go next.
Looking around, there didn't seem to be many alphas or betas participating this year but there were many couples milling around before the season started when the full moon was high in the sky. By now, the sun had already set, leaving us in the dark and torches were lit around the grassy plains.
All the packs in the world were here. We had seven, one in each continent. And each pack had an alpha and a beta. And all seven alphas reported to the alpha King who was not just an Alpha and who resided in the United Kingdom.
Will and I were in the North American pack and even though Will was only twenty-five and considered to be way too young to be beta in a pack, he was very capable and dedicated to his job. But me? I wasn't sure if I was able to deal with being the mate of a beta.
As if Will seemed to know what I was thinking, he held onto my hand tightly and rubbed comforting circles on my hand. Looking around once more, I caught sight of a tall muscular man standing in the shadows watching Will and I.
Somehow, the man seemed familiar but I was really sure I had not met him before in my life. Because I would have definitely remembered him. As he was in the shadows, I could only see the planes of his defined cheekbones and jaw and his silver-grey eyes that was observing Will and I.
An excited smile crossed my face at the thought of Will and I up there on the altar later on. I guess I must have been daydreaming for quite a while until everything and everyone turned silent and that is when I broke out of my thoughts.
I watched with vague interest as Alpha Kingston stepped onto the altar and I looked out for his mate to see that there weren't any.
I knew everyone was wondering who was the poor soul who wanted to be mated to someone like him but no one dared to speak. "Brendon, where's your chosen? There isn't a name on the list." The Alpha King spoke quietly to Alpha Kingston who stared coolly back at him.
"Her name is Sydney Carrington."
At that I gasped and my eyes widened. I could feel my heart stop and all the colour in my face turned white. "NO!" Will burst out and Alpha Kingston turned around to face him challengingly. And immediately, Will turned silent and he shot a horrified and worried gaze to me.
I could feel gazes of pity and horror on me and the Alpha King looked a bit perplexed. "Sydney, could you come up here please." I looked around panicky and my heart was beating so fast I was sure it would explode. I walked up to the altar slowly and reluctantly. All I wanted to do was to run off with Will but I couldn't because I was unable to deny a request made by the king.
Stepping onto the altar nervously, I was sure that all eyes were on us. I refused to meet the strong steady gaze of Alpha Kingston on me. Instead, I curtsied to the Alpha King and he spoke out, "Do you have your vows?"
At this, I panicked again before calming myself down, I was sure the King could stop whatever madness was going on. "I'm sorry sir but this is a mistake. I'm not supposed to be with Alpha Kingston here. I already have a chosen. He's a beta from my pack." I explained quietly and the Alpha King raised his eyebrows.
"Then what is all this with Alpha Kingston?" He questioned and I looked up at Alpha Kingston for a moment and met his gaze and said, "I don't know. I've never met him before-"
