"Cookie, don't you wanna go say hi to your brother? He's been in a car accident you know." He tried to shake her off like an annoying cute animal who was begging to be petted.
"Well," She said, annoyed. "I guess he was in a car crash." She slowly let go of Lucas's arm and walked away, giving me a dirty look.
Lucas took a sip of his coffee. I always hated coffee. It smelled disgusting, it tasted bitter…Why would anyone want to eat or drink something bitter? That's the worst of four tastes. I even hate coffee candy. When I was little, playing with my dolls, having a tea party, well a coffee party - I pour cold water into those tiny cups, and then stole some of mom's coffee and mixed it with the water. It tasted gross. But I thought that when I grow up I'll start liking coffee. Like everybody else. But I never did. Plus I still watch cartoons. And enjoy it. Hm, maybe I never grew up. Maybe I'm forever stuck in Neverland. "I didn't know Jimmy had a sister."
"Half-sister." Lucas corrected me. "His mom remarried after she divorced his dad. And then came Cookie."
"They named her Cookie?" I had a hard time believing that someone would name their child…Cookie.
"Not exactly," Lucas took another sip of his coffee. "her real name is Elizabeth and her last name is Cook - her dad's last name, and she always thought that it would be cutter if people called her Cookie and not Lizzy." The word cute sounded so weird coming out of Lucas's mouth. So weird. Unnatural. Elizabeth. So the-Lucas's-attention-seeker does have a normal name.
"She seems to…like you."
"She's annoying." So much for Lucas's brilliant explanation.
I was so tired I had to lean on the wall behind us. I closed my eyes, just for a second…
"The course of true love never did run smooth." I opened my eyes and saw Lucas softly looking at me. He was so drained, tiny wrinkles appeared beneath his eyes, but he still looked…captivating. There wasn't a single mortal being on this planet that wouldn't be amazed by the gaze of gorgeous Lucas Dashwood. Even immortal would stood still, inviting him to join them in forever.
"What?" I asked, too tired to even blush properly.
"Shakespeare."
"Ah, so he recites Cobain and Shakespeare." I mocked him. I was impressed, though.
He smiled, showing his dimple. "Shakespeare was Kurt Cobain of Renaissance. I respect that."
I closed my eyes, trying to remember something I learned ages ago. "When he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars, and he shall make the face of heaven so fine, that all the world will be in love with night, and pay no worship to the garish sun."
Lucas laughed and leaned next to me. "That was very impressive Skye Monroe. Who knew you can quote Shakespeare like a professor. Tell me," He licked his lower lip. "how long did it take for you to memorize all that?" He gave me one of his naughty looks.
"Half an hour." I admitted embarrassed and we both laughed. "We had to memorize our favorite quote from Romeo and Juliet in English class…and I liked that one. I don't know why…it's just beautiful."
"That old thing? It still works?" I remember her calling it our little Cranberry. We drove everywhere in that car.
"Yeah…it was a little dusty and it didn't start right away, but I did it. It's a mother's duty to take care of her daughter." She smiled at me. Smiled. She almost never does that. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
"I'm Lucas. Lucas Dashwood." Lucas suddenly butt in a mother-daughter moment.
"Oh, hello Lucas, I'm Carrie Monroe, Skye's mother." She smiled. Again. Is this my mom?! She is almost normal!
"Nice to finally met you." He politely smiled back. Devil in disguise.
"Yes. Are you Skye's boyfriend?"
"What?! Mom! N…"
"Boyfriend? I didn't know Skye has a boyfriend." He continued the conversation, completely ignoring me. That devil was doing this on purpose!
