"Skye."

Oh no.

I slowly swallowed and turned my head towards the end of the hallway.

My mom.

She stood there, in that calm way which was typical for her, staring at me and Lucas. There was no surprise on her face...only a calm, emotionless expression.

"Come into the kitchen." She said as she crossed her hands and turned away. "Both of you."

Lucas looked at me with a shocked expression. We didn't know what to say or what to do, so we just followed my mother towards the kitchen.

She was sitting at the kitchen counter on one of those green bar stools we had, drinking her morning coffee. "It's 6 AM." She started, still dressed in her flannel pyjama with lamas on it.

"Yes." I answered. "It is." I didn't know what to say...or how to explain Lucas...

"I know I'm not a normal mother..." She twirled the spoon in her coffee. "And that I don't react to situations like other parents, but...did you really think I won't notice a boy spending the night, nights in our home?" She lifted her head, still looking at me with a blank expression, but...with a slight hurt in her eyes.

"I..." I started, but I couldn't go on...

"It's my fault." Lucas suddenly spoke. "I asked Skye if I could stay here, Mrs. Monroe." He was standing so tall, taking all the blame.

"No, mom, I should've told, I mean asked..." I tried saying something that made sense.

"No I, um, I knew that he was staying here, I mean I found out yesterday...The smell of cigarettes...At first I thought it was you, but your breath was the same as always, so that excluded that possibility, so there was only one other explanation. There was someone else smoking cigarettes here. Since I deducted that I didn't start sleepwalking and smoking, I knew it wasn't me. So if it wasn't me or you, there must have been somebody else. Plus, I found these." She lifted her hand, holding a pair of Lucas's black boxers.

"Sorry." Said Lucas and grabbed his underwear, blushing.

"I was deciding how to confront this situation, all night. So I chose to say this: You are a teenage girl. You cannot have a teenage boy living in your room. I am the parent, so I make the rules. There will be no intercourse, or in case it already happened, you should know the following;"

"Mom, stop!" I yelled. "Nothing happened," Okay, I lied. "under your roof." Here's some truth. "I'm sorry I hid Lucas from you, but I didn't know what to do. He's got nowhere else to go..."

"It's okay Skye, I can crash at a friend." Lucas said. "Mrs. Monroe, I am truly sorry for my behaviour, I shouldn't disrespect you like that."

I looked at her through my blurry eyes, still gripping onto Lucas, just in case he would try to leave again.

After a few minutes I finally calmed down and stopped crying. We all sat down at the kitchen table. Mom poured us some chamomile tea, which was soothing. It tasted sweet, but not too sweet, and it felt good in my stomach, like a hug from inside.

"So," Mom crossed her arms. "Lucas, is it?" She looked at him with more parent in her eyes than ever before.

Lucas nodded.

"You can't go to your dad."

"No, Mrs. Monroe." He gave her a soft smile, but I knew there was some sadness in his gesture.

"Your mom?"

"Passed away."

"So sorry to hear that." Mom got startled at an unexpected response. She didn't like surprises. "Do you have any other family?" She calmed down.
