But dealing with Alaric Rhodes, there was an added layer of warmth and deep respect.
"You brat, did you completely forget you have a grandfather back home?"
The old man was clearly chewing on something, his words slightly muffled.
"Not at all." Channing frowned. "I'll come visit you next week."
"Really?" The old man sounded highly suspicious. "If you're lying to your poor grandpa, I curse you to stay single for the rest of your life."
Channing's eye twitched. That was one curse he was genuinely terrified of.
"Never mind, you don't have a wife anyway." The old man scoffed. "Three years ago you claimed there was a girl you liked and that you were pursuing her. It's been three years. Where is she?"
"Where is your wife? Where is my granddaughter-in-law?! Where?!"
Channing took a deep breath, answering helplessly, "She's too wonderful, and too many people like her. She's a bit hard to pursue."
"Useless. How can you even admit that?" The old man criticized without mercy. "What does she even look like? Why won't you just let me see a picture of her?"
He desperately wanted to know what kind of woman could leave his grandson entirely captivated, chasing after her for three whole years.
And failing miserably, at that.
"It's not the right time yet." Channing added, "She's been thinking about kicking me out lately, so I have to tread carefully. I can't afford a single mistake."
Alaric: "Did you forget you're the ruler of Caelus?"
Channing: "So what if I'm the ruler? In front of her, I'm completely expendable."
"I don't have time to listen to your nonsense." The old man rubbed his temples, feeling both exasperated and heartbroken for him. "Come back soon so I can knock some sense into you, you brat."
He hung up the phone.
All traces of the old man's playful banter vanished, his face turning incredibly somber.
"Sir, is everything alright?" the steward asked cautiously.
"My heart breaks for that kid." The old man sighed, his eyes red-rimmed. "He finally found someone he loves, but he just can't seem to win her over."
If he wasn't afraid of pissing the kid off, he would have personally flown out to find the girl.
And begged her to accept Channing.
Because he truly, truly was a good boy.
