Annie's P.O.V.

"Oh shit!" Evan removed his hands from my body and jumped up. I sat up quickly and tried to straighten my dress.

He helped me stand. "We are up here!" He let his mom know. Pretty soon she was coming up the stairs.

"What are you two up to?" his mom asked. She sounded like she was suspicious.

"Just talking," Evan said lamely.

"A-ha...anyway, I went to talk to your mother but she wasn't home. Do you know where she might be, Annie? Is she at work?" his mom asked me.

I looked down. "She doesn't work today," I said.

"Do you have her cellphone number?" she asked.

"It's on my phone. I don't have it memorized," I said. It wasn't like I ever called her anyway. Evan grabbed my phone and gave it to his mom.

"I am going to call her, okay? It's not that I don't like you living here with us. I just want to make sure everything will be okay if you go back to your house," she said gently.

"I understand," I said and smiled. Evan's mom has already done a lot for me. I couldn't continue to be a burden to her.

She called my mom and waited.

"Hello, Miss Fisher? This is Stacy, Evan's mom. I was just calling to see if you are ready for Annie to come home? I believe she needs her mother," Stacy said. That was nice of her to say but too bad my mom didn't feel the same way.

"Please call me back when you get this message," she said and hung up. I guess my mother never picked up the phone.

"I am sorry Mrs. Green. I wish my mom would..." I started to say.

She came over to me and wrapped her arms around me. "Oh sweetheart, don't apologize. You've done nothing wrong. You can stay here as long as you need to. Evan doesn't mind it either. Isn't that right?" she asked.

"No. I don't want her going back to that bitch," Evan said gruffly.

"Evan! Be polite," his mom scolded him.

"No, he is right. She never treated me like a daughter. I was just a piece of trash to her," I said. My voice was thick with emotions as I tried to choke back my tears.

"It's going to be okay," she whispered gently. "And call me Stacy, okay?"

I nodded. Even though I felt like a burden, I was glad I Evan's mom is so kind to me. Why couldn't my mother act like this?

"Do you have any relatives that you can live with? Evan is right, it's not a good idea for you to go back to her," Stacy asked.

I thought hard about it. My mom didn't have any siblings. I don't know where my father is. My life was a big mess. And I was dragging this nice woman and her son along with it. I shook my head no.

"Then don't worry about it. You can stay with me for now. But you do realize I'll have to call the social services since you are a minor, right? Will you be okay with that?" she asked.

"Yes, whatever you think is best," I said timidly.

"I am going to go and make a few phone calls. Maybe try to reach your mom again," she said and left the room.

Evan hugged me from behind. "I won't let anything happen to you," he whispered in my ears and kissed me on the cheek.

"I'll take you there," Evan stepped in immediately.

"I am coming with," I said.

"Me too," Lily declared.

"You all don't need to follow us around every step of the way," Evan said irritably.

"It's okay if they come. I'll be quick anyway," Annie remarked.

We all went across the street to go to her house. Evan knocked on the door but to our surprise, the door just opened by itself.

"Hello?" Evan called out. "Annie's mom?" No answer.

We walked inside the house and looked around.

"I have to go upstairs to get some more things," Annie said so Evan helped her go upstairs. Lily and I followed suit.

Something didn't feel right as I looked around the house. It was dead quiet and it looked like a lot of things were missing like pictures on the wall. I thought as I looked at the outline of frames on the walls.

"Hey, I am gonna go get something to drink from your fridge, if that's okay?" I asked and Annie nodded in agreement.

I went downstairs and went into the kitchen. But before I opened the fridge, I saw a note stuck on the fridge that had Annie's name on it.

It was a letter from her mom.
