Eighteen very slow minutes later, I forgot where the stupid boundary was and now Delilah just kept on going while I remained confused.
You could say that I completely forgot my problems for the hour but now I had something to focus on that wasn't even very thrilling, to say the least.
There I was, on a big brown cow who was going minus twenty miles per hour, stupidly worrying over the fact that I was probably trespassing that awful ape of a man's property once again.
I mean, really, how could he be so rude and unfeeling? How could he even let only me go through this on my own, wherein fact I was even willing to help him with this big trouble he was about to have major problems with?
Well...he really didn't even want to do all that but still, you know? Be more of a gentleman and less of a beast! Even though I felt a pang of sorrow for him when we last saw each other, facing his conniving family, I was a victim also and he shouldn't have --
"Ooooophrmgh!"
Delilah gave a surprisingly vicious snort that made me jump in alarm. She was skittering restlessly, mashing her hoof on the grass like a cornered bull. I held tight on her reins and tried to remain on the saddle, but Delilah moved heavily to the left, making me swing to the right and the momentum carried me to the ground with a loud thud. But the fall didn't hurt me because I landed on top of a body. At first I thought it was a dead body, like some psycho killer had dumped it out in the open, which totally had me freaking out for a second.
Until the body's mouth grunted and coughed.
My eyes swivelled to a face so handsome, it almost hurt me more than my sudden fall. And then a pair of beautiful (but very confused and angry) violet eyes, with a tinge of sapphire and silver, glared at me. I immediately (although clumsily) shot up like a rocket, hitting his ribs with my elbows without really meaning to.
"Oooof," he wheezed out like a true, injured man.
I crouched back down, guiltily, my brows knitting in worry. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Are you extremely hurt? Never mind," I rushed in, chewing on my lower lip, "that was a stupid question. Of course you're hurt..."
Colton Cutting, to my surprise, managed to stretch his lips out far enough to bare his perfectly straight teeth, but it was far from a grin. "Healthy as a horse," he groaned, trying to get up but failing. He side-eyed Delilah. "Or cow."
"Oh God, you're in a lot of pain," I accused, wringing my hands. In the background, the cow mooed.
"Not that hurt at all," he managed to croak. "Just my kidney, and my spine, and my --" He broke off into a heavy set of coughing fit that made me wince.
"Crap," I whispered shakily. "I'm so sorry! Did I knock the breath out of you when I fell off of the cow?"
"You knocked it clear to the Highlands, Olivia."
I puffed my cheeks and flung my arms. "So what if I chose to stroll the area --"
"-- my area --"
"-- on top of a cow named Delilah? It's not like it's illegal." I could never be a lawyer, but over my dead body would I allow him to win over this ridiculous argument.
Unfortunately, Colton didn't even bother retorting. His only sound was a groan as he tried to get up (pretty awkwardly, in my opinion.) I instantly felt bad. It really wasn't his fault I'd fallen from Delilah's back and had landed squarely on top of him in a mad rush. He deserved a little rescuing, at least.
Curse my urge to help people.
I started to reach out for him. "Let me help you."
He gave me a nasty sideways look that stank of sarcasm that could reach all the way to the west coast.
I gaped. "You know what? FINE. Fine! I won't help you!" I exclaimed, standing up and throwing my arms in the air. "Tend to yourself, then. I hope you have a great time walking home. What is it -- a couple miles ahead?"
