That was when Cole had actually realised just how beautiful the girl was until they were mere inches away.
Until she clumsily elbowed him on her way up and opened her mouth.
His head began pounding like the very devil as much as his whole upper body, while struggling to block her words of concern and apology, like waving off a distracting fly. The next thing he knew, Olivia looked like a woman whose steam was about to go out of her ears, starting to walk away with her cow named Delilah.
His intention had been to apologise and look where that got him. Total chaos. But he wasn't such an arse that he wouldn't try to make things right with Olivia. So he started shouting her name, only to feel his head pounding like the very devil once more.
Cole lifted his head long enough to see her stride off, sighed, and promptly passed out.
"Stupid, ungrateful jerk!" I grumbled, marching Delilah down the road. "He doesn't deserve help from anyone! He's unbearable and obnoxious and...and mean.
Seriously! Who would even like that guy? Sure he had a face that was worth being captured and preserved for centuries but if his heart was as black as Orly's Gunmetal Satin nail polish (which I never used), then no one should waste their time trying to befriend him!
Although I felt a little bad that I left him lying on the grass. He'd been calling my name but I had ignored him -- he obviously deserved that...
The insufferable guy might be struggling to get up by now or...or a wake of vultures could be circling his body right this very moment.
Okay, so that was way far off because Colton wasn't dead (yet), but it could happen! Maybe foxes or wolves were spying on him somewhere in the trees, patiently waiting for their moment.
I sighed. The young lord had brought a brief measure of excitement into my life (and what a whopper that turned out to be), but it was now clear we wouldn't suit. I did, however, feel a touch guilty about leaving him lying in the forest grounds. Not that he didn't deserve it, but I always tried to be charitable, and...
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. One look back wouldn't kill me. Just to see if he was all right.
"Gah," I said, holding it back and waving the smell in front of my face. Pungent fumes filled the air. This did not smell like the Windex I knew. I wondered if Aunt Mary doubled up the doses of vinegar so it'd be a match for a pepper spray.
I looked down at this young man I'd actually considered being fake-engaged to. Even unconscious, there was a certain air of resolute power about him.
"Well," I said out loud, "I guess we can at least use it to wake you up." I held the bottle in front of me and placed it under his nose.
No response.
I frowned a little bit and placed my hand over his heart. "Hey, Colton, you haven't gone and died since the last time you groaned, right?"
