"Still unrealistic but way better than Brett!" Oliver chuckled, pulling me toward him to give me a noogie.
Brett called me before I boarded the plane, telling me how he missed me so much. I wanted to point out that he could've come with me to the airport to see me off, but the tenderness in his voice had been my undoing. We promised to head on to video chatting as soon as I settled in.
There was also one thing he was now saying that made me fall over a man who sat on one of the chairs for waiting while I was walking. I kind of whisked his toupee away...
Good thing the line to the plane was already in motion.
"Sorry!" I shouted over my shoulder, fleeing as fast as my long legs could go.
"Klutz!"
"What's happening?" Brett asked curiously on the other line.
"Nothing," I rushed, already stumbling as I fell in line with the others. "Brett, what did you say a minute ago?"
"Um...take care?"
"Before that!" The woman in front of me eyed me like I was a lunatic.
Brett was quiet. "You mean...'I can't wait to be with my girlfriend after summer?' 'Cause, you know, we'll go to the same university and all."
Girlfriend. "You..." I took a deep breath, fighting off a smile. "You called me your girlfriend?"
"I did. And of course you are," he chuckled. "We've been going out for a while. Didn't you think you were?"
I coughed. "Well, you know." (Cough, cough.)
He laughed. If he were with me, he'd ruffle my hair, I was sure of it. "See you soon, Olivia."
Girlfriend.
"I love you. I always have, Elizabeth."
She didn't know what to say to James as he slowly came toward her. Her beautiful green eyes widened and her plump, rosebud lips formed a perfect little oval that made him smile.
Pushing my sunglasses firmly up my nose, I gently pushed my cart toward the exit. Where were they? I didn't think they'd recognise me since the last time they saw me was when I was seven, but there was a thing called Facebook and both my relatives had them.
I moved over to one side, standing near a glass door as I began composing a short instant message to Aunt Mary, telling her I'd arrived, when I heard a familiar voice.
"Oh, Eddie, look at that backpacker! Pretty little thing, isn't she?"
"Hmmm, probably a model, on to some next shoot, my love."
"D'you think our own Livvy has grown into quite a beauty like her? What's her top? Looks like it came from Top Shop but I doubt it. Must be worth a hundred quid, surely!"
"Right you are, my love, right you are. These supermodels dress so casually when the truth is..." Uncle Eddie went on and on.
Locking my phone, I started grinning and turning around to face them. I tightened the strap of my backpack and started walking toward the familiar voices.
Two people stood near a silver BMW. My relatives: the Dunsters. Aunt Mary was of average-height and had a willowy figure, with soft blond hair and big brown eyes just like Mom's. Uncle Eddie, on the other hand, was a bear of a man, who stood at six feet and big like, well...like a bear. He had thick brown hair and bespectacled hazel eyes. He also had a fuzzy beard like one of the hipsters who went to a local coffee shop at home, and a gruff voice. He looked like a super-smart mountain man, to be honest, but he was a sweetie though, and he and my aunt were perfect.
