Then the beastly cat ran like hell wheels on fire toward the hill.
The cat stole my necklace! A thief! I couldn't let it go; my parents gave that to me on my eighteenth birthday!
This was the day I began to hate one cat for the first time in my life.
With a groan, I got up and ran as fast as I could toward the location of the miserable creature. For a fat cat, he was fast.
"Come back here, you thief!" I shouted.
"Meooow!" he hissed back.
Then he found a humongous tree and climbed it. He seemed to struggle for a moment from his staggering weight and a cat version of a beer belly, but he made it to a high branch and laid down like he was in freaking paradise. He suddenly reminded me of that wicked cat in Alice in Wonderland.
My necklace was clamped between his teeth, then he put it down on the branch and pawed it. I couldn't believe it.
"Give that back to me!" I commanded.
He merely looked bored.
I grumbled and marched back and forth in a huff, thinking of a plan. But I really didn't have much choice. I had to climb up.
Before doing that, I suddenly became aware of my surroundings.
I was in a large estate with an equally daunting manor that seemed to belong to Mr. Darcy. My eyes rounded at the thought that someone might find me and call the police for trespassing!
But I had to get my necklace. I had to.
Gritting my teeth, I pushed my sleeves up and went around the tree since the front didn't give me much area to stick my hands and feet in place. The back had quite a few.
"I'm going to get my necklace from you," I ground out, puffing as my arms unceremoniously flailed and failed. Then I attempted again. "You're going to get it, I swear!"
"Meooow," the cat answered in a monotone.
That only amped up my adrenaline.
Then, miraculously, I got halfway up the tree! I was about to move again, with my arms and legs wrapped around the bulky trunk, like some wild Amazon from the wilderness, when a horse's hooves pounded on the ground, whinnied and halted, and a voice came out of nowhere like a whip, startling me.
Just thinking about that made his features taut and, with a low, vicious curse, he descended his horse and walked straight toward the bloody fool, wrapping his hands around her trim waist and yanking her away from the tree before she made even more of a cake of herself.
She was caught off guard that she couldn't even form words but odd, breathy huffs as he effortlessly carried her (albeit roughly) into his arms, and plopping her on top of his dark grey Arabian stallion. As soon as he did that, he immediately placed one foot into the stirrup and hopped onto Gazelle.
And so, before she could protest, he clucked his tongue and nudged the stallion into a run toward the back entrance.
Well, I got my handsome dark knight on top of a majestic horse, all right. But he wasn't what I expected, like, at all.
"Excuse me?"
I couldn't believe what I had just heard. I mean, here I was, in an elegantly masculine study that seemed to be a set for freaking Downton Abbey, while a ridiculously handsome and equally crazy young man lashed out on me in clipped sentences that were filled with atrocious male arrogance!
"Oh come now," he drawled lazily, crossing his arms and leaning a hip on his giant mahogany desk, "aren't you here to set your sights on marrying me?"
"What?"
Who the hell did this dude think he was? The nerve! He looked fresh out of college or something and he was talking about marriage? My mouth hung open in sudden shock as I stood a few paces away from him.
