“All right,” she finally said. “I give up.”

Cale raised an eyebrow. “Give up?”

“I’ll call you both what you want me to.”

Lydia smiled in satisfaction. “Try it. I want to hear it.”

Naomi looked at her for a few seconds before saying somewhat awkwardly, “Lydia.”

“Yes?”

Naomi then shifted her gaze to Cale.

“Cale.”

A faint smile appeared on the man’s face. “Good.”

Naomi immediately pointed at him. “Don’t get too happy.”

“I’m just saying it’s good.” Cale said it with a flat expression.

“You look way too pleased.”

Lydia could no longer hold back her laughter. Cale smiled faintly as well, while Naomi finally joined in. It might not have meant much to anyone else, but to them, the change in the way they addressed each other felt like a small sign that their relationship had indeed changed.

Their conversation then shifted to the baby’s room. Lydia imagined a room with large windows and soft colors, while Naomi began offering several opinions that she thought made more sense. Cale even joined in when Lydia asked who would be the one to spoil their child the most.

Naomi imagined something that eventually, without realizing it, turned into words. “Then your child should get ready to receive lots of gifts.”

“And you’ll teach them to talk back?” Cale asked.

Naomi crossed her arms. “If they inherit your stubbornness, someone has to teach them how to survive.”

Lydia laughed even harder. Even Cale finally joined in. But beneath the laughter, something slowly began to grow inside Lydia. All this time, whenever she imagined the future, there had always been a sense of fear creeping in. She was afraid something would happen again. Afraid of losing the people she loved. Afraid that the happiness she had just found would be taken away from her again.

But that night was different.

She heard Cale talking about the baby’s room. Heard Naomi arguing about names. Heard the laughter filling the family room. For the first time, the future no longer felt like something too distant or too dangerous to imagine.

It was late at night when Naomi finally went to her room. Before leaving the family room, she glanced at her phone and let out another long sigh.

“Chris hasn’t contacted you?” Lydia asked.

“He’s in Geneva.”
