Eli let out a long sigh. “I thought maybe I really was being too sensitive. I thought maybe I was thinking too much about how close they were.” Eli smiled faintly, but there was no happiness in it. “I even felt guilty for a while. I thought maybe I was the one making everything complicated.”

Grace sighed softly. “Eli...” That was all that came out of her mouth before she fell silent again. She seemed to want to say something, but in the end, she let Eli continue.

Meanwhile, Naomi chose to simply listen to what Eli had been saying.

Her eyes began to well up. She wiped the corner of her eye when a tear began to fall. “I heard her say it herself. She said she was only telling people what she saw. She said she never said I cheated.”

“But she also knew exactly what would happen if she told other people about Josh and me. She knew people would think all kinds of things.” Eli swallowed. “And now everyone really is thinking all kinds of things.”

Grace slowly shook her head. Her face showed increasingly clear disbelief. “She really said that?”

Eli nodded.

“I don’t know what Natalie really wants. But I know she was the one who started it. And all this time, whenever everyone started talking about me, she would still come to me and say that she was defending me.” Eli let out a soft laugh, but her eyes grew even wetter.

“I trusted her, Naomi. That’s what makes me feel so stupid.”
