Chapter 691
Morning at the Miller mansion began with the aroma of toasted bread, warm coffee, and the voices of children far too excited for breakfast. It reminded Lydia of the atmosphere in the main Miller family home back in SunCity.
So she had asked the kitchen staff to prepare a long dining table filled with all the breakfast foods Josh and Grace loved. As expected, they adored it. The dining room, usually calm and orderly, was now alive with the clinking of utensils against small plates, glasses of juice being set down, and overlapping conversations colliding from every direction.
Grace sat beside Naomi, swinging her legs under the chair. Across from her, Josh was busy explaining a business economics lesson he had recently learned to Daven. The man listened attentively, occasionally sliding over samples of his own work. It was almost as if he were making a quiet declaration that one day, Josh Callister would inherit everything Daven was building now.
On the other side of the table, Althea sliced fruit while somehow managing to ask light, effortless questions without sounding like she was interrogating anyone. Chase Junior sat calmly with his nanny, his mouth smeared with the porridge his mother had prepared for him.
“So how long did you live in Germany?” Grace asked curiously. “Now I really want to visit.”
“A few years,” Naomi replied, spreading a thin layer of jam over her toast. “You should go in winter. Some places are beautiful when the snow falls.”
“Really?” Grace looked at Naomi with shining eyes.
Naomi answered with an enthusiastic nod.
“Oh, did you live there alone?”
“For the most part, yes.”
Grace looked confused for a moment, then asked again, “Is living alone fun?”
Naomi gave a small shrug. “I don’t know whether other people would call it fun or not, but I think having noisy days can be just
as nice.”
“Sometimes it gives me a headache,” Grace complained, stirring her cereal bowl.
“A headache?” Lydia spoke this time. “Is it because Josh is too loud?”
“I heard that,” Josh protested. “And you should know, Aunt Lydia, Grace is the one who causes chaos. Not me.”
Grace glared at him indignantly, “You make a fuss over pointless things all the time.”
Josh stuck out his tongue, teasing his sister without the slightest concern that she might explode or burst into tears in a moment. To Josh, provoking his little sister was a satisfaction all its own.
Daven sipped his coffee and watched the morning disorder with a long sigh, only to glance at Lydia and find her laughing, clearly amused by her children’s behavior.
“Just let them be,” Lydia said through a smile. “My dining room finally feels lively.”
Naomi laughed softly as well. Warm scenes like this still felt unfamiliar, but they no longer made her stiff and uncomfortable. A few days with them had lowered some of the walls she had built around herself.
Part of her, though, could not help feeling envious of the harmony the Callister family showed so naturally in front of her
At the far end of the table, Cale’s chair had already been empty by the time Naomi arrived in the dining room.
“Your husband left awfully early,” Althea said to Lydia.
“He married his work before he married me.”

Althea laughed. “And I hope you wouldn’t say the same thing about me.”
“I’ve already cut back on a lot of work to be by your side, darling,” Daven protested immediately before Lydia could say anything.
That only made Lydia laugh harder.
Quietly, Naomi glanced at the wall clock. The time she had been waiting for was almost here. If the owner of this house forbade her from going, then she would find out on her own. How hard could it be to locate a cemetery somewhere around here? She had more than enough free time.
After breakfast ended, the children ran off to the family room. Althea and Lydia began debating lunch menus. Daven stepped onto the terrace to take a work call. The staff busied themselves clearing plates from the table. No one noticed Naomi rise slowly, excuse herself to return to her room, then turn instead into the side hallway leading to the exit.
The morning air greeted her as she slipped through the small gate beside the garden. For the first time since arriving in Hong Kong, she was outside without direct supervision.
Her heart pounded hard, not from fear, but from the determination she had gathered the night before. She could not fail in finding her parents’ graves.
She opened her phone and stared at the screen.
Cemetery near Central Hong Kong. Old family cemetery Hong Kong. Cemetery near me.
Several locations appeared on the map. Full of confidence, she stepped farther beyond the gate. No guards were posted there, making it easy for her to check the surroundings. The street was quiet, calm, almost too calm.
