Noelle could feel the air go still with awkwardness. She hadn't expected the elevator to remain on the same floor. She must've forgotten to press the buttons, or it should have descended to the parking level.

She turned slightly to glance at her colleagues. Judging by their expressions, she could guess what they were thinking.

The next second, Cedric reached out and held her hand before turning to the colleagues standing outside. "Apologies. My girlfriend was trying to show me a joke."

Noelle tried to pull her hand back, but the shameless Cedric refused to let go. So, she had no choice but to force a strained smile as her colleagues swarmed in.

The elevator was silent, though no one could guess what thoughts were swirling in their minds. When it reached the parking level, everyone filed out as they headed to the dinner spot together.

Noelle yanked her hand back with force and stormed out, but Cedric followed her. She stopped in front of her SUV, turned around, and glared at Cedric. There was a clear warning in her gaze.

Cedric leaned one hand on the car door and said, "We're going the same way. Let's ride together."

"I'm not taking you with me."

Seeing how mad she was, he softened his tone and whispered, "I know my mom came to you. Can we talk?"

Noelle fell silent. She caught a few glances from her colleagues and finally bent over to get into the driver's seat. Cedric took the passenger side and glanced around the car. "This SUV suits middle-aged men."

"So what? I like it," Noelle snapped and kept a straight face.

He glanced sideways at her and said, "If my mom said anything that offended you, don't take it to heart. Do what you need to do, and don't let others change who you are."

"You love making yourself look good, huh?"

As soon as Noelle said so, she regretted it a little. Cedric looked at her and probed, "What did you two talk about?"

"Nothing much. Emma came to apologize and explain about you. She said that you were innocent. As a stepmother, she's surprisingly kind to you."

There was more she didn't say. Emma had told her she'd rather die than accept a kidney from Ruth, and she'd never help the Merlocks.

But Noelle hadn't taken her words at face value. No one could remain calm in the face of death. Even if Emma could, the others around her would never allow it.
