She said nothing at first, then she looked at me and quietly said, “how could you do this, Ava?”

She didn’t shout, she didn’t even cry but her voice cracked and that was worse than if she had slapped me across the face.

I didn’t mean to, I’m being threatened, I wanted to shout but I didn’t say anything. I just kept staring at the floor as tears welled up in my eyes.

“You’re eighteen, Ava. Just eighteen. And you’re already doing all of these?” Her hands shook. “What next? Drugs? Drinking? Dropping out?”

“I’m sorry,” I whispered as I fell to my knees. I’m pathetic. I’m useless. I got myself into this.

The ride home was brutal and no one said a word, but here at home, with the three of them? They had a lot more to say.

My father stepped inside and shut the door behind us like he was sealing a tomb. “We raised you better than this. We gave you everything.”

“I didn’t mean for it to—“ I couldn’t even finish the sentence, what did I even want to say? The lump in my throat was too thick and my face was soaked in shame.

Liam folded his arms and I just knew he was not done digging my grave.

“I told her to break it off with Kye,” he announced, his voice filled with that righteousness I have now grown to hate. Just shut the fuck up. “But she didn’t listen. And I’m worried because Kye doesn’t seem to care about her, he had no good intentions.”

“How sure are you of that?” I snapped, feeling my own anger rise.

I didn’t mean to yell, it just came out and my voice cracked on the edge of desperation.

Liam turned to fully face me, his eyes filled with an unreadable emotion. “I watched our practice video,” he started, his voice calm and steady. “And I saw that Kye didn’t tackle me for the sport but to hurt me instead. You think that’s a coincidence?”

I flinched and stared at him dumbfounded. What?

“And I just have a feeling that Kye is up to something,” he added.

My father looked between us before his eyes finally landed on Liam. “What do you know about the boy?”
