For the past few days, things have been good and I felt like I could finally breathe. The halls weren’t haunted by sharp brown eyes, the corners weren’t shadows waiting to swallow me whole. There were no cryptic messages, no threats and no bruises on someone else’s knuckles or on my neck.

Kye was gone… nowhere to be found and I didn’t ask questions. I told myself I didn’t care about where he went, what he was doing to whatever had happened to him. Maybe he finally found someone else to torment or maybe the universe realized that I needed a break from everything that was going on. Or maybe someone put a bullet in him… I wouldn’t cry either way.

My father had forgiven me too, that storms had passed, for now. And I promised that if I ever ran into Kye again, I would keep away from him with no words and no hesitation. Just walk away.

However, I was still mad at Liam. I still couldn’t look him in the eyes without the memory crawling back… his betrayal hurt me to the bone. The ambush. Him standing at the front of the school doors looking like he was some self righteous judge that was sentencing me in front of our father. No warning, no time to lie. Asshole.

He was still at home, watching me like some makeshift prison guard. But I was always avoiding him now, I was quiet and I acted like I was asleep anytime he came into my room to talk. I don’t think I’ll be forgiving him anytime soon.

Asher came by the over over the weekend, too loud as usual, the kind of obnoxious behavior that made silence unbearable after he left. He cracked jokes and stuffed his face while he made small talk with my father like he hadn’t witnessed me and Kye the other day. I didn’t speak much nor did I laugh either.

Later, Caleb knocked on the door. My little cousin, all serious faced and wearing an oversized hoodie, like he was walking into a war zone instead of my bedroom.

“Are you okay?” He asked the minute he got to me.

No I'm not, but I’ll be fine. I blinked at him. “Yeah, I am.”

“But you’re not your usual self,” he countered.

I forced a smile and leaned back on the bed. “I’m just tired. But I’m good.” Life is normal again.

He paused, narrowing his eyes at me, then said, “if someone is bullying you, you know you can tell me, right?”

My throat clenched. What?

“I’ll handle it,” he added, puffing his chest in that twelve year old way that made my heart break a little.

I let out a soft yet bitter laugh. “Thanks, soldier. I got it covered and thank you for checking on me.”

“Anytime,” he replied with a cheeky smile. “I just want to make sure my favorite cousin is okay.”
