I hovered near the stairs, hearing every word. I pray this goes well.
“Someone is coming for dinner?” Liam announced, his voice neutral and his shoulders squared.
“Who?” Dad asked, cocking an eyebrow as his body tensed up.
“It’s Kye,” Liam replied coolly and I waited for the bomb to explode.
“Who’s that again?” Dad asked, the confusion in his voice written all over his face.
“It’s the same boy I told you about.”
“He’s coming here?” Dad’s voice was sharp, already laced with tension. “That boy!? No, I won’t allow it.”
Well, there goes our plan down the drain.
“Yes, dad,” Liam shot back, his voice smooth, convincing. “I want to give the guy a chance and we need to see what his intentions are. You always say to keep your enemies close.”
“I said that about business rivals, not some boy who blackmailed your sister and was fucking her like a slut.” Ouch.
“He won’t hurt her. Not when he thinks he still has a chance, plus Ava really likes him.”
I winced. “Yes, I do,” I managed to say even though I had been standing there quietly, hoping that I didn’t have to talk. Well, that’s wishful thinking. And I wasn’t lying about liking him.
“What do you know about liking someone?” Dad shot back, glaring at me and I looked away, the floor suddenly more interesting. “I refuse and I don’t care what your reasons are because—“
“It’s fine, let’s meet him,” mom’s voice cut through as she squeezed dad’s hands trying to calm him down. “If after we question him and try to get to know him, if we don’t like him, we’ll know.”
I wasn’t sure what I had expected, but I didn’t think they would agree so easily. Maybe part of me had hoped that they would say no and force me out of this plan.
But no one was coming to save me. I have to play the part.
I took my time getting ready, trying not to overthink it. My fingers trembled as I zipped up my dress, not because I was nervous about dinner but because I knew he would soon be here.
