I get him. After all, didn’t I get that nagging feeling that things will go horribly wrong? But what choice do we have? Even if I become the anchor for the spell, there is Xena to be worried about and something tells me that she won’t rest until Kaden is free.

“Brian’s helping us. He’s training the warriors.” I change the subject.

“You’re letting him near our warriors?” he asks, alarmed.

“I know how it sounds,” I say quickly. “But I have this feeling, King. I don’t think he’s like the others. I think there's more to him than what we’ve seen, plus we made a deal and I don’t think he’d dare cross me.”

He doesn’t answer right away. “I trust your instincts,” he finally says, even though I can still hear the caution in his voice. “But just… be careful.”

“I will.”

There’s a pause before I speak again, my voice lower now, more thoughtful. “What do you think will happen to them? The hybrids, I mean. If I can’t find a way to reconcile her and Nyx, then I’ll have to kill her… what happens to them? Do they die with her? Go back to being wolves or witches or vampires? Or do they just stay like this forever… A new species?”

King is quiet. “I don’t know. Maybe no one does. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

I nod, even though he can’t see me. “Has Beth come back?”

“No, she hasn’t,” he says.

My heart sinks. “I miss her. I’m worried something happened to her.”

I honestly don’t know where she goes and every time we ask, she’s always so vague with her answers.

“From what you told me, she can take care of herself,” he says gently. “Don’t worry she’ll come back when she’s ready.”

Funny thing is that Beth and King have never met. I know, it’s weird… but for some reason, when Beth is around, King is always away; by the time he comes back, Beth is gone.

Now that I think about it, is that just a coincidence or is it something else… but then again, it’s happened too many times over the three years to just be a coincidence.

“I hope so.”

We sit in silence for a moment before I take a breath. “I need you to come here, King. I need all of you with me for this final stretch. We’re getting ready to take Kaden down, and I can’t do that without my family.”

He doesn’t hesitate. “I’ll be there. Give me a week, maybe two. I’ll put things in place and find someone to run the pack in our absence.”

Relief washes over me. “Thank you.”

“In the meantime,” I add, “I’ll have someone record the training sessions with Brian. We’ll send them to the warriors back home. It might help them get a better idea of what we’re up against.”

“That’s smart,” he says. “Do it.”

We say our goodbyes, and I end the call, slipping the phone back into my pocket. I take a long breath, tilt my face up to the sky, and close my eyes.
