Xena.
The moment it happens, I feel it.
A pull in the air. A sharp, glowing shift that thrums deep in my bones like a long-forgotten melody finally remembered.
Sadie.
She’s done it.
She’s summoned the scepter.
I clench my jaw as I pace the stone floor of my chamber, the shadows bending with my mood. My fingers twitch at my sides as excitement thrums inside me. I'm barely able to contain all of it.
She’s getting stronger, and this is exactly what we need.
I know Nyx is probably pushing and I love that. Let her push. Let Sadie master those powers. The stronger she gets, the better chance of freeing Kaden.
She doesn’t know it, but she’s going to play a huge role in helping me free my mate. She's the missing piece and she has no idea. That alone makes my heart thrum with happiness. The fact that I'm using her and she doesn't even know it.
I can’t wait to see the look on her face when she realizes that she was playing to my tune. That everything she did will lead to Kaden being free.
"Blake!" My voice cuts through the silence.
Within seconds, the door creaks open, and Blake steps inside, eyes sharp and unreadable as always and loyal to a fault. Just the way I like him.
"You called?"
I don’t stop pacing. “Any word on her?”
He shakes his head once. “No. The men say the sighting wasn’t her. False alarm.”
It’s starting to get on my nerves that I can’t find her. I mean, how fucking hard is it to find one weak woman?
My mother has managed to dodge my attempts to capture her for years and it’s starting to seriously piss me off. Everything I’ve planned won’t have the effect I want it to have if she isn’t there to witness me destroying everything she built.
I stop, turning to face him. “They’re sure?”
“They swore it. Whoever it was, it wasn’t your mother.”
I exhale slowly, but there’s no relief. Only irritation. “She’s really good at hiding.”
But what else could I expect from her? There is a reason why she was queen.
Blake doesn’t speak. He knows better than to offer empty reassurances.
Part of me wants to believe that maybe she’s already dead. That being in her weakened state killed her, but I can’t. Let’s just say that my mother is really hard to kill. She’s probably out there biding her time and getting stronger.
I move to the arched window and peer out at the sunny sky, where the sky bleeds into jagged mountain peaks. “And the push?”
Blake steps closer. “It’s unfolding exactly as you planned. The seeds you planted are sprouting. Everything is falling into place just like you had planned and none of them are the wiser.”
A small smile tugs at the corner of my mouth.
Good.
One of the places I excel at is strategizing. Nyx should know this, but it seems she’s too blinded by her bitterness to even realize I’m playing them like puppets.
"Anything else?" I ask without turning.
