Sienna:

The elevator doors opened with a quiet chime as I stepped onto the executive floor. My heels echoed on the polished floors, and I adjusted the folder in my hand. Damon had asked me to drop by for a final update before the weekend, and despite the whirlwind of the past few days, I was starting to settle into this new role.

It was all that he did not expect to be holding. It was a role that I did not know whether or not I would be able to succeed in but judging by how things were going I assumed that I was doing a good thing.

Damon seemed to be happy. He seemed to be proud. At least that was what he was saying. He did not need to correct me more than once when it came to our task, which was a very important thing in my part.

I wasn’t just the mother of his daughter anymore.

I was a woman building something of her own.

A partner.

A force.

And though I was still new to it, I did my best. To try and make him proud, despite all what we have been through, he was giving me a chance this was his empire, this was something that he fought to build, and I knew that it had not come easy for him to allow me to hold something like this, for him to simply give it to me. I knew not to fail him. And not only for him, but this was the empire that was going to be left for my daughter as well.

But fate had a way of testing your pride right when you least expected it.

The second I turned the corner, I saw her, Lysandra.

Standing by the reception area, speaking to one of the interns like she owned the building. Her perfectly manicured fingers trailed lazily along the glass surface of the desk, and the second she spotted me, her lips curled into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“Well, if it isn’t the charity case herself,” she said loudly, her voice cutting through the floor like a blade. “I wouldn’t have expected to see you, but it seems to me that you’ve been roaming around here, you’ve been actually working. Does he actually consider your partner or an employee? I am curious.”

A few heads turned. Of course they did.

Everyone would want to take a glance of what was happening between the shareholders and when it was me and Lysandra that were included, I knew that we would be top notch of gossip.

The tension in the air turned brittle.

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t slow down. I simply kept walking, my steps steady, until I was standing right in front of her.

“Lysandra,” I said coolly, not giving her the satisfaction of a smile. “Didn’t think you’d be the type to still hang around a company run by a man who doesn’t want you. While you are a partner, I don’t think that you should be crossing a damage with me either. I, just like you, I’m one too.”

“One thing that you need to understand is that you are never going to account to who I am. I did not get what I have for free. That is the difference between the two of us.” Her jaw tightened, but she recovered fast. “This building used to have standards. Now we’re giving offices to low ranks with sob stories and bastard children. That’s very sad, actually.”

There it was. The venom.

People around us pretended to look busy, but I could feel their eyes on us, ears straining for drama.

I took a single step closer, keeping my voice calm, even as heat simmered in my veins.

“I would warn you,” I said softly, “not to say another word about my daughter. You want to embarrass me? Go ahead. But you bring Isla into this again, and I will stop being polite. And I think that you don’t want to get yourself involved with the low rank, would you?”

Lysandra blinked, visibly thrown off by my sharpness. “Do you really believe that standing behind Damon, that having him defend you is going to get you anywhere?”

He was standing there like he’d been waiting, his green eyes locking onto mine instantly. And without a word, he pulled me into his arms, his hand sliding around my waist, the other cupping the back of my neck as he kissed me.

Firm. Deep. Like a man who wasn’t going to let go.

My heart skipped as I melted into him, surprised by the intensity.

When he finally pulled back, he looked down at me, his thumb brushing the corner of my lips.

“You’re going to make me proud, Sienna,” he said, his voice low. “No, you already are.”

A rush of warmth flooded my chest. My throat tightened.

“You saw?” I whispered.

“I heard,” he said, with a small smirk. “And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to throw her down the stairwell. But I also figured that letting you be the one to handle things would be a better option.”

“I handled it,” I said simply, leaning against his chest.

“That you did,” he murmured, wrapping his arms tighter around me. “And if she ever tries again… I won’t let you handle it alone.”
