Sienna:

I didn’t realize I’d fallen asleep until I felt the slow, steady rise and fall of Damon’s chest under my cheek. Until I felt him gently drawing random patterns on my shoulder as he hummed a soft tune under his breath.

We were lying on the couch in my office, the air still thick with the heat of what just happened. My blouse was draped half across his arm, his shirt tossed over the edge of the desk, my legs tangled with his under the blanket he’d pulled over us from the chair nearby. I didn’t even know that I had a blanket in my office or why I had in the first place, but I didn’t care. It served its purpose, which I didn’t realize was needed in an office, today.

His fingers traced soft, lazy circles along my spine, and for a moment, it felt like the world outside didn’t exist. Like we could stay in this bubble of silence and warmth where everything else didn’t matter.

I felt his lips graze my hair. “You awake?”

“Barely,” I whispered, burying my face in his chest. “Did you get any sleep?”

“No, I didn’t need to. But I also didn’t have it in me to get up with you laying as comfortably as you were.” He chuckled, his voice still husky. “You should be resting more often. You look good like this.”

I smiled, but before I could reply, the door swung open.

“Okay, I am going to pretend I didn’t see this,” Ethan’s voice broke through the peace like a jolt of cold water. I sat up immediately, grabbing for the blanket to cover myself, well, there was nothing that needed covering, but the idea of him walking in on us while I lay in Damon’s arms, especially after our earlier conversation, wasn’t one that I expected.

Damon just sighed and stretched, as if we’d been caught doing something as casual as napping with coffee in our hands. I didn’t even dare to look up at Ethan, who I knew would be smirking.

Ethan shielded his eyes dramatically as a low, playful, gasp escaped him. “I swear, this building has paper-thin walls. The whole floor heard you two.”

I could feel my face burn.

“Headphones exist for a reason. And we weren’t that loud.” Damon smirked, making my eyes widen.

“Do I need to recite…”

“Ethan!” I started, wanting to get up, but Damon pulled me back down beside him, wrapping an arm around my waist like I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere.

“You came here for?” Damon asked, pushing the subject back as if this was a casual thing to be talking about. My heart hammered against my chest, but I did my best to stay calm.

“I will leave the two of you to it?” I asked, wanting to get up. Damon shook his head as he tightened his grip around me, refusing to allow me to leave.

“We’re partners, remember?” he said, clearly unfazed. “You are going to stay. Mind you, this is your office.”

Ethan’s teasing smirk faded into something more serious as he stepped farther inside, letting the door shut behind him.

“I came to give you an update.” He nodded toward Damon. “The board is starting to buzz. Word’s gotten around about Sienna becoming your shareholder. Giovanni’s people are already sniffing, and we’re picking up chatter from two other territories, mainly business alliances watching how this plays out. And they are acting based on his orders.”

Damon’s jaw tightened. “Let them watch. And if they want to act on his orders, I would assume that they would be willing to deem themselves as my enemies as well.”

I nodded, eyes meeting his. “Are you? Though I think that you know that you might owe me an explanation to what you and Ethan are planning.”

“I am now.” He said, his eyes softening. “You leave the dirty work to me. I will handle it. All I want you to do is be who you are. The rest, we’ll take care of.”

I opened my mouth to respond but was stopped when he connected his lips with mine, making me laugh before he pulled away to rest his forehead against mine.

Fine, I was dropping the subject… for now.

We sat there for a moment longer, tangled in a silence that meant everything.

And as I rested my head on his shoulder again, I realized something, this was no longer just his office.

This was ours.

And whatever came next, I wasn’t walking into it behind him.

I was walking beside him.
