“Even if there’s no one else, I will not let Ruby take over!” Frieda declared, her fists clenched. Though she had left the family, she was still a Steele by blood. She couldn’t let her own daughter, a venomous influence, ruin their legacy.

“With Pearl unwilling and no other suitable heirs, they were forced to choose Ruby,” Hanley said with a sigh, patting her hand. Then his eyes lit up. “Frieda, if you’re that worried, I have an idea…” He pulled her closer, his expression earnest. “Your aunt and uncle are old and stubborn. If they insist on Ruby being the heir, let them.”

“Are you insane?” Frieda snapped, her eyes flashing with disappointment. “Hanley, after all these years, are you still holding a grudge because my family wouldn’t accept you? We can’t just let Ruby destroy everything!”

Hanley just smiled. “You misunderstand. I know you don’t trust her with that kind of power.”

“Then what are you suggesting?”

“Listen to me,” he said, gently turning her face back toward him. “If Ruby must be the heir, then so be it. She is still a Grayson, still our daughter. Even if the Steeles say you’re no longer part of the family, as her parents, we have a right—a duty, even—to help her manage her affairs.”

Frieda frowned, considering. “You mean…”

“But,” she hesitated, “the Steeles would never allow me to get involved. As long as my aunt, uncle, and Pearl are around, they would never let me get my hands on the business. And I’m technically an outsider now.”
