Ruby had no patience left to argue with the two toddlers. She slammed her palm on the table. "If you two aren't in your rooms this instant, you can get the hell out today. Don't even wait for tomorrow."

Landon’s jaw tightened, and he clenched his fists, but one look at Ruby’s strained face and his defiance melted away. He turned and trudged upstairs, his shoulders slumped in defeat.

Sylas, on the other hand, was practically gloating. He shot Ruby a flirtatious wink before heading out, looking so pleased with himself he could have floated up the stairs.

Ruby was speechless. She opened her mouth to yell another reprimand, but just as she did, Sylas’s expression shifted and he vanished in a blur.

Hayley and Fanny, who had watched the whole spectacle unfold, simultaneously facepalmed. They sometimes wondered if there was something about Ruby that just attracted such eccentric characters.

After a few days together, Fanny had completely forgotten that Landon was once a figure she’d looked up to.

“If you’re heading back to Grayson Manor tonight, do you need us to wait for you somewhere nearby?” Fanny asked Ruby.

Ruby shook her head. “No, if I’m going to put on a show, I have to go all the way. I’ll probably have to spend the night.”

The other two nodded thoughtfully, saying nothing more.

The afternoon slipped by quickly.

For her visit, Ruby chose a white, gauzy dress she used to love years ago. While she had never been favored by Frieda and Hanley, her grandmother’s love had been boundless. She had wanted for nothing in her care—food, clothing, it was all provided. Her closet had been overflowing with princess dresses.
