Leo’s eyelid twitched. Sitting low in his wheelchair, he was far enough from the hospital bed that he could make out Adrian crouched beneath it, their eyes meeting in the dim space.

Adrian, sprawled on the floor, grinned up at Leo and gave a little wave.

Leo’s face remained impassive—utterly unruffled, as if nothing on earth could disturb his composure. Even if he were to discover a naked man hiding under the bed, he’d still look as calm as ever.

He stared at Adrian in silence. Adrian fished out his phone.

A moment later, Leo’s own phone buzzed with a new message.

“Don’t get the wrong idea, Leo. I was already on Selene’s bed before you came in. I just figured it’d be a bit much for you to handle, so I hid.”

“Guess I’m just quicker on my feet than you.”

“Are you angry, Leo?”

“It’s just a little fun between Selene and me! Not something older folks usually get, so no hard feelings.”

Leo shut his eyes, holding his breath against the cloying scent of herbal tea that filled the room.

“Hm?” Altair glanced curiously at the unmoving Leo.

Just a short while ago, Leo had been so reluctant to leave Selene’s side. Now, it seemed he was the one who didn’t want to go.

“Professor, are you alright?” Selene asked gently, noticing the pallor in Leo’s face.

Leo didn’t mince words. His tone was cold, commanding, “Don’t disturb Selene—she needs her rest…”

He didn’t get to finish before a little girl’s bright, innocent voice rang out behind him:

“Mommy!”

Daph came running in, clutching a thermos. Spotting Leo, she quickly lowered her voice and greeted him politely:

Daph ran into her mother’s arms, making Selene’s face light up with a radiant smile. She pulled back the covers and swung her legs off the bed.

Daph’s sturdy arms wrapped tightly around Selene’s slender waist. She pressed her face against her mother’s stomach, breathing in her familiar scent, and finally felt at ease. The whole previous night, she’d felt like a feather drifting in midair, unable to settle.

“Mommy, you should lie back down!”

Selene hugged Daph close, bending down to plant a gentle kiss atop her daughter’s head.

“Did you sleep well last night? Did you have a good breakfast this morning? I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there with you.”

Once she had Daph in her arms, Selene couldn’t bear to let go.

Daph buried her face in Selene’s embrace. “I took good care of myself, I promise. Uncle Luke told me you were in the hospital and I was really worried, but I’m still little, so there wasn’t much I could do. Uncle Luke stayed with me and looked after me.”

Luke Holloway had done a wonderful job caring for Daph—her clothes were spotless, and her hair was neatly brushed.
