Harrison stared at the signature at the bottom of the invitation, his eyes lingering on the name “Selene” for a long time.

For a moment, he felt as though he didn’t recognize those letters at all—Selene sounded utterly foreign to him now.

He’d spent less than a month at Serenity Church, but after coming back out into the world, everything felt different, as if reality had shifted in his absence.

Back when he’d signed his name on the divorce papers, he never imagined there’d come a day when, at work, he’d receive a business invitation from Selene herself.

Harrison murmured, “So QuanTech Innovations actually has something to show already?”

Secretary Burnett replied, “Under Mr. Thompson’s leadership, the lights in their headquarters haven’t gone out before midnight in weeks. Word is, Mr. Thompson made a bet with Ms. Lockridge—she promised to deliver on the automated truck project within three months.”

“Three months?” Harrison could hardly believe his ears.

Secretary Burnett nodded, confirming that he’d heard right. “There are only two months left until the deadline.”

Harrison let out a low chuckle. “Selene’s really bitten off more than she can chew. She has no real experience.”

Burnett added, “Our senior team doesn’t think QuanTech Innovations can pull this off in just three months. Plus, Mr. Thompson keeps pushing us for results, and people are starting to grumble.”

Harrison tossed the invitation onto his desk. “Their first trial run is bound to be a disaster. Selene’s going to make a fool of herself.”

His tone grew almost leisurely. “Maybe she needs to hit a wall or two. Only then will she realize just how out of touch she is with the real world.”

“Hello, Mr. Vaughn.”

As Annalise approached, Harrison finally turned to look at her.

She paused for a moment, taking in his features, before smiling. “Mr. Vaughn, you really are just as impressive as they say. I’m honored to have the chance to meet with you.”

Harrison glanced at her, his expression cool. “It is an honor for you.”

Annalise blinked, momentarily at a loss for words.

“I wouldn’t have made time for this meeting without a reason,” Harrison said, gesturing for her to sit.

Once she was seated, he looked at her and asked, “I hear you’re working for my ex-wife these days.”
