The assistant’s face lit up. “Oh, Ms. Thompson, you and your brother are so close! You’re so lucky!”

Selene offered a small smile, feeling a pang of guilt for using Luke as a cover. “We’ve always been close. He loves to cook, and he’s very caring.”

“Wow! I’m so jealous,” the assistant gushed. “Well, I won’t disturb your meal. Enjoy.”

Once her assistant had left, Selene breathed a sigh of relief. She reopened the bento box and looked at the beautifully arranged meal, filled with all of her favorite dishes. She propped her phone on a stand and played the live security feed as she ate. She noticed that a few of the dishes on her dining table at home were identical to the ones in her lunchbox.

Adrian and Daph finished their meal quickly. Although Selene always reminded Daph to eat slowly, sometimes even making her count ten chews before swallowing, Adrian wasn’t as meticulous and didn’t want to micromanage her.

On the screen, Selene saw Daph helping Adrian clear the table.

“I think we ate a little too fast today,” Adrian remarked once they were in the kitchen, realizing their paces had been different. For Daph to have finished at the same time as him meant she’d been rushing.

“It’s because your food is too delicious, Mr. Shaw!” Daph said sweetly.

A soft chuckle escaped Adrian’s nose. “Next time, maybe I’ll get you one of those slow-feeder bowls. Even when your mommy isn’t here, you need to slow down.”

Daph pouted playfully, pretending to be sad. She knew he was right, but she’d only sped up because it was just the two of them. “But your food is so good! If I eat slowly, I feel like I’ll starve to death!”

Adrian’s eyes crinkled in a smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you starve.”
