Jo didn’t waste any time. He flipped open his tablet right away, and up popped a grid of faces caught on hidden security cameras—some close-ups, some wide shots.

The entire estate, inside and out, was covered with cameras. Not that anyone would notice—they were all concealed, practically invisible unless you knew exactly what you were looking for, or you were intimately familiar with the estate’s layout.

Even the perimeter was under Jo’s watchful eye.

Miranda hadn’t said much, but Jo clearly had his suspicions about her background, and he definitely knew plenty of people—on both sides of the law—kept tabs on the young lady of the house.

That’s why Jo took his role as house manager so seriously. Sure, he handled all the daily logistics, but his main gig was keeping an eye on security, twenty-four-seven.

Miranda glanced at the tablet.

Whoever it was, they looked like they were just passing by—not paying any particular attention to her place. Hardly anyone even knew she’d moved to Virell; her new house was bought through a third party, so her name wasn’t attached to anything.

These people looked well-trained, though. Maybe nothing to do with her… but then again, maybe not.

“Keep your eyes open,” she told Jo, her voice calm but firm. “We have the right to defend ourselves here—if anything happens, don’t hesitate.”

Jo nodded, a little too eagerly. “Understood.”

His voice had an unmistakable excitement—almost like he was looking forward to the chance.

Miranda took a few steps, then paused and shot Jo a look. “You seem awfully excited.”

Jo coughed and tried to hide a grin. “Not at all.”

No way was he about to admit he’d been hoping for some legally justified action if the wrong people set foot on the property.

Miranda eyed him, unconvinced.

She knew Jo better than he thought.

After all, ever since she’d joined RapidForce, healed a bunch of army vets, and handed over her formulas, she’d been awarded a First-Class Service Medal by the military. Her pharmaceutical company had only been around for a few days, but it was already under government protection, and the military had exclusive rights to several of her new drugs.

Miranda blinked. “Why are you still here?”

She’d figured Carter would crash for a day or two, tops. Yet here he was, still making himself at home.

Carter puffed up his chest. “I moved in!”

Miranda stared at Jo.

Jo shrugged. “Yup. Mr. Hawke’s officially living here now. Upstairs, left-hand room.”

Carter squinted at Miranda’s neck. “Hey, did a mosquito get you?”

Miranda instinctively touched her neck—then remembered something, her expression souring.

This guy… he really did bite like a dog.
