Charlotte’s gaze sharpened as she processed Lucy’s words. A glimmer of realization crossed her eyes. “You mean her? Now that’s a perfect ally.”

“But before that, there’s something else I need to take care of,” Lucy said, her eyes dark with malice.

At 6 p.m., James returned home after work, unaware that Lucy had been released.

Massaging his temples, he braced himself for what awaited inside. He knew Mrs. Chancer would pester him again to help Lucy, and Charlotte would likely still be upset over the ongoing issues with Sarah.

Suddenly, the door burst open, and Lucy stormed in, her face twisted in anger.

“James, all because of Sarah, this is how you treat me? Mom begged you over and over, and you still refused to help me! You don’t even see me as your sister!”

James frowned deeply, leaning against the doorframe to steady himself. His voice was cold as he replied, “I don’t see you as my sister? Then maybe I shouldn’t have saved you all those times before.”

Lucy’s eyes flashed with resentment. “So you’re finally admitting it. You never wanted to save me! Every single time, it was Mom begging you before you reluctantly helped me.”

James’s expression grew colder, his gaze detached and distant. For the first time, he truly looked at Lucy, scrutinizing her. “Say that again.”

His eyes burned with a dangerous intensity. Lucy’s face paled, her eyes red with unshed tears. She opened her mouth several times but couldn’t bring herself to speak again—she was terrified of James.

Lucy clutched her face, her eyes burning with resentment as she glared at him. “The moment she’s in trouble, you run to protect her. But when it’s me, you don’t care at all. Can you even look Charlotte in the eye and say you don’t have feelings for Sarah?”

James glanced at Charlotte, who stood to the side, wringing her hands and looking fragile and pitiful.

He realized he had been too thoughtless these past few days. Taking a breath, he walked over to Charlotte and softened his tone. “Charlotte, I’m sorry. She’s my ex-wife, and when I saw she was in danger, I stepped in to help. That’s all—it was just to prevent anyone from getting hurt.”

He gently pulled Charlotte into his arms. Her eyes reddened, and after a moment, she nodded slightly.

Lucy, however, wasn’t about to let things go so easily. “Fine! Then promise me you won’t protect her anymore!”

James frowned, about to refuse, but then he caught the look in Charlotte’s eyes. Without thinking, he replied, “Alright.”
