On the weekend, Sarah had the day off. She made a simple breakfast—toast and eggs—but before she could take a bite, a loud knock interrupted her.
Hurrying to the door, she opened it to see Scarlett standing there, her eyes red and swollen. Scarlett rushed in and immediately broke down, hugging Sarah tightly as she sobbed uncontrollably.
“Sasa…” Scarlett’s voice trembled, clearly shaken by something serious.
Sarah gently patted her back. “What happened, Scarlett? Take a deep breath and tell me.”
After a long pause, Lindsey finally stood up, tears streaming down her face. “Sarah, my dad—he was in a car accident.”
“What? How is Uncle Larson? Is he at the hospital?” Sarah asked anxiously.
“My dad’s okay,” Scarlett said through her sniffles. “But his car crashed into another one. While my dad’s fine, the person in the other car hit their head on the airbag and now has neurological issues. To make things worse, that person’s family owns a company that’s a major rival to ours. We used to keep things civil, but now they’re going all out to destroy us.”
She wiped her tears and continued, “Our parts have always been better than theirs, but now our factories keep having problems—fires, equipment breakdowns—it’s been nonstop. Before the accident, my dad had signed a huge contract. If we can’t finish on time, we’ll lose everything. We’ll go bankrupt.”
Sarah hadn’t expected things to escalate this far. She tried to reassure her. “Can’t your dad hire more security to guard the factories?”
Lindsey grabbed a cup of tea from the table, drained it in one gulp, and said, “We’ve already stationed plenty of guards, but it’s no use. They’re determined to take us down.”
“Scarlett, calm down and tell me everything,” Sarah said, giving Scarlett’s hand a comforting squeeze.
“I begged Old Mr. Luther. I told him I know a great psychologist who could help his son. He said that if his son recovers, he’ll stop targeting my family.”
Sarah frowned. “But didn’t he suffer neurological damage?”
“No,” Scarlett explained. “The Luther already brought in a top neurological team to treat him. Now the issue is psychological.” Her voice wavered as her eyes turned red again.
Sarah had never seen Scarlett so distraught before. She nodded firmly. “I’ll help you. Just tell me when you need me to go.”
Though Sarah couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the situation didn’t add up, she couldn’t ignore the kindness Uncle Larson had shown her in the past. Back when she stayed with the Larson family, he had treated her with a familial warmth she hadn’t felt in years.
