Unlike the excited energy in Alice’s class, Anastasia’s side of the room felt heavy, almost funereal.

Maggie stared in disbelief.

“Wait, am I seeing things? Why does that mysterious big shot look so familiar?”

“You’re not imagining it. That’s the same guy we ran into at the hotel!”

Someone piped up, clinging to a thin ray of hope. “Back at the hotel, he was actually pretty nice to Anastasia…”

“That’s only because Anastasia owns the place! But this is different now. He’s obviously here to back up his girlfriend. Anastasia’s crossed Alice—no way he’ll go easy on her.”

Helen was the one who said this. She wasn’t like the others; not only had she seen Harrison at the hotel, she’d also spotted him at the apartment. She even knew he was Anastasia’s secret patron.

But as much as they hated her, they knew she had a point.

For a moment, anxiety settled over the group, everyone quietly worrying for Anastasia.

Ten members of the honor guard stood in formal dress, Alice and Anastasia among them.

But Alice had been given the coveted first spot, right at the center where all eyes fell on her. Anastasia, meanwhile, was shunted to the very end, half-hidden in the shadows where few would notice.
