Logan, stationed by the door as the ever-watchful timekeeper, could barely contain himself as the bantering between Anastasia and Marcus showed no signs of stopping. He finally interjected, his voice laced with exasperation: “Mrs. Carter, Mr. Marcus Jackson, hate to break it to you, but you’ve already burned through twenty minutes.”
Anastasia and Marcus froze mid-quarrel, as if doused with cold water.
Twenty minutes? Already? Harrison had only given them ninety minutes total!
A wave of tension swept over both of them.
But then, a little spark of delight flickered in Anastasia’s eyes. Ninety minutes, true, but Harrison had only asked her for eight hundred words. Meanwhile, poor Marcus had to write a full fifteen hundred. Sucked to be him.
Marcus clearly realized it too. His face fell, the mood around him turning bleak and desolate.
Seriously, what was with Harrison playing favorites like this? Wasn’t it a little too blatant?
The clock kept ticking, every second more oppressive than the last. Anastasia stared at her blank page, utterly uninspired. Suddenly, a mischievous glint flashed in her eyes. Without hesitation, she crumpled up the sheet she’d managed to scrawl a couple of dry, half-hearted sentences on, and tossed it in the trash.
She pulled out a fresh sheet and, in large, bold letters, wrote:
**Darling, I love you so, so much! Kisses~**
To finish it off, she drew a big, cutesy heart at the bottom.
She laid the pen down, picked up her “apology letter,” and got up, ready to hand it in.
Marcus, who had witnessed the entire process from start to finish, stared at her in disbelief.
“Are you seriously planning to turn that in to Harrison? I’m telling you, that’s not going to fly.”
Still, in the spirit of shared suffering, he felt compelled to warn her. “You know Harrison—he’s not going to buy that. He’ll just double your assignment. You’ll be stuck writing sixteen hundred words!”
“I don’t believe you! My husband would never do that to me!” Anastasia shot back, clutching her “apology” and dashing off with a grin.
She bounded up to Harrison, bright-eyed and bubbling with anticipation. “Honey, I finished! Here you go!”
