Alicia couldn’t stand it any longer. She turned off her phone and started thinking about what to wear to the gathering.

Tyrone had been busy lately—apparently he was racing to meet some project deadline.

Without his help picking out her outfit, Alicia felt completely clueless about fashion.

She pulled a dress from her closet and paired it with some flats.

The doctor had told her to avoid any bumps or falls for now, so flats were the safer choice.

After all, it was just a casual get-together; she only planned to listen in on updates about the language program.

Once she was dressed, Alicia stood with her phone in hand, debating whether to tell Tyrone.

What if he was swamped? Would letting him know just distract him?

She was still hesitating when Tyrone texted her first.

Tyrone: What do you want for dinner tonight?

Alicia replied earnestly: My class is having a get-together this evening. I might go.

Tyrone: Where is it? Send me the address. I’ll pick you up when it’s over.

She found the address in the class group chat and sent it to him.

Tyrone: That’s close to my office. I’ll come find you when I finish up.

A gentle warmth filled Alicia’s chest, as if something inside her was slowly being mended.

At 3:30 in the afternoon, the driver arrived to take Alicia to the class gathering.

When she arrived, none of her classmates had shown up yet.

Chloe’s smile was icy. “That’s right. We made a new class group chat a while ago—and you’re the only one not in it.”

Alicia’s nose stung, but she said nothing. “You know restraining someone’s freedom is against the law.”

She tried to leave, but Chloe wouldn’t budge from the doorway.

Mina’s mother and Vincent’s mother wore matching looks of disdain as they sat down, regarding Alicia from above. “Miss Shelton, let’s have a civilized conversation.”

Alicia’s anger flared. “There’s nothing to discuss.”

Vincent’s mother spoke, her voice cold and measured. “You’re a smart woman, Miss Shelton. You must realize your marriage to Tyrone won’t last. Why block your own way forward? I heard you and Vincent were together for four years, and then you sent his sister to jail. Was that revenge? Or are you trying to force Vincent to marry you?”

Alicia let out a short, incredulous laugh. “You’re overthinking it. Mira broke the law and hurt someone. She should be held accountable—simple as that.”

Vincent’s mother’s expression hardened. She pulled a checkbook from her purse and slid it across the table. “Write whatever amount you want, or name your terms. What will it take for you to leave my daughter alone?”
