Alicia Shelton watched Tyrone Lynch with growing worry—he looked angry, though he tried to hide it.

After ending his call, Tyrone softened when he turned to her, reaching out to ruffle her hair. “I need to step out for a bit. Be good and have your dinner, alright? Wait for me to come back.”

Alicia’s anxiety lingered. “Is something wrong at work?”

Tyrone managed a reassuring smile. “Nothing serious. Just a hiccup with a project.”

Not long after Tyrone left, Alicia’s phone rang—Vincent Lawson.

She had already blocked Vincent’s number, but he always seemed to have another phone. This time was no different.

“Hello?” Alicia answered, noticing the unfamiliar number.

“Alicia…” Vincent’s voice was hoarse, thick with alcohol.

“Miss Shelton, Mr. Lawson’s had too much to drink at Nightfall and insists you come get him. No one can reason with him… Could you please come and pick him up?” his assistant pleaded softly after taking the phone.

Back when they were together, Vincent would always have his assistant call Alicia whenever he drank too much—no matter if it was pouring rain, a blizzard, or the kind of storm that sent branches flying. Alicia would drop everything to make sure he got home safe, then cook him a pot of soup to sober him up, another to settle his stomach.

She had always been too good to him. Vincent only realized it after he lost her.

“I’m sorry, but it’s really inappropriate for you to call me,” Alicia replied, her tone frosty. “Vincent and I are no longer involved. I’m married now. Please stop calling—my husband might get the wrong idea.” Her patience was running thin.

If Vincent was drunk, shouldn’t he be calling Mina Holloway these days? Why her?

“Alicia… must you really be so heartless?” Vincent’s voice cracked, choked with emotion and booze. “I broke off my engagement with Mina. Didn’t you see the news?”

She remembered the way Tyrone had left earlier, tense and distracted. Her voice was low, urgent. “Vincent, what have you done this time?”

“Tyrone had pinned his hopes on that project,” Vincent said, his tone flat. “But my family’s firm, Lawson & Co., took it from him.”

“Vincent! That’s enough. Why do you have to go after Tyrone at every turn?” Alicia snapped.

“It was Maddox Lynch who handed it to us,” Vincent replied wearily.

Alicia froze, stunned. Silence stretched between them.

“Maddox has completely given up on Tyrone. He’s set on giving Lynch Corporation to Easton, and at the same time, he’s trying to force you and Tyrone to have a child… He asked me to pull you away from Tyrone. So, Alicia, you need to think carefully. As long as you stay with Tyrone—as long as your marriage continues—Maddox will keep coming after him. Tyrone is strong enough to fight back, but do you really want to see a family destroy itself from the inside?”

Vincent’s voice was hoarse, but he knew her too well. After four years together, he knew: threaten her any other way, and she’d never leave Tyrone. But push her with the people she loves—Alicia just might break.
