Rebecca hesitated before finally speaking. “Two billion dollars isn’t exactly pocket change—we’ll need time to gather that much.”

Borg let out a cold laugh. “Are you telling me the mighty Thomson family needs time to scrape together two billion? Who do you think you’re fooling?”

“I’m not lying to you. Even for the Thomson family, moving that kind of money takes time. You have to understand, it’s not as simple as just pulling it out of thin air,” Rebecca replied steadily, watching as Samuel approached with a group of associates.

On the other end, Borg scowled. He didn’t really believe that the Thomsons couldn’t come up with the money, but Rebecca’s explanation sounded plausible enough—maybe raising that much cash did take time. Borg had never seen such a sum in his life. For all he knew, Rebecca could be telling the truth.

“So how long do you need?” he demanded impatiently.

While Rebecca stalled for time, Samuel was already having his team investigate. One of his men worked quickly at a laptop, then shook his head and typed a message for Rebecca to read: “Their IP is masked—no way to trace their location. And the bank account they gave is overseas, which makes it nearly impossible to track.”

Rebecca’s expression tightened. She’d been deliberately dragging out the conversation, hoping to pinpoint the kidnapper’s location through the phone signal. Clearly, the kidnappers were one step ahead.

She’d have to think of something else.

Meanwhile, Borg was growing more and more agitated. “How much longer? I’m warning you, my patience is running thin. You’d better hurry, or you’ll regret it.”

Rebecca answered, “Half an hour. In thirty minutes, I’ll show you proof of the funds. But I have one condition.”
