Ethan grumbled inwardly, shook the water off his small hands, and put on his most serious face. “No way. I’m already a big kid. How could I possibly get lost?”

Garcia smiled politely. “Well, aren’t you impressive? By the way, do you happen to know your dad’s name? How about I help you find him?”

Ethan arched an eyebrow. “You want to find my dad?”

Garcia tried to coax more out of him, but this little boy was a tough nut to crack. She had no choice but to say, “Yes, sweetie. I just want to make sure you’re safe. Let me take you back to your dad, okay?”

Ethan’s mind spun. Why did she suddenly want to find his dad? Could it be she’d seen him with Uncle Samuel and assumed Samuel was his father? Maybe she thought Uncle Samuel was handsome and took a liking to him?

Ethan was full of suspicions, but he kept a straight face.

When he didn’t move, Garcia asked gently, “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

Ethan replied, “Nothing. If you’re so eager, then by all means—escort me back.”

He was curious to see what Garcia was really up to.

Garcia felt a surge of relief and followed Ethan out of the restroom.

All the way back, she tried to strike up a conversation, hoping to learn more, but Ethan clammed up and wouldn’t say a single word. She hadn’t expected this little guy to be so tight-lipped.

Garcia led Ethan back into the dining room, where they found Samuel.

She put on a concerned face. “Excuse me, sir, this little one got separated from his group. I thought I’d bring him back to you.”

Samuel glanced from Ethan to Garcia, a puzzled look crossing his face.

Ethan, get lost? With his personality, not even a kidnapper could drag him away. How could he possibly wander off? Samuel didn’t know what game Ethan was playing, but he simply replied, “Thank you, ma’am.”

The other kids caught sight of Garcia and looked just as confused.
