At the very least, Soren was someone who could actually compromise. But Lance wasn't like that at all. He was the type who'd devour her completely without leaving a trace.

Tara thought about how there were less than four months left. Once she quit, she would safely exit the plot and steer clear of both Lance and Soren.

She was really counting down the days until she could leave. Otherwise… forget Lance and Soren—at this rate, even she might be unable to resist temptation.

Tara thought to herself, "This is really too much to deal with."

40 minutes later, Tara saw Peggy head up to the second floor. She waited a little longer until Peggy entered Lance's room. She didn't want anyone to see that she got a gift from Shawn. That would look bad.

Even though she knew that Shawn didn't have that kind of intention toward her, misunderstandings like this were hard to explain.

Tara followed shortly after with the jewelry bag, going up to the second floor and tucking it into the bottom cabinet of the meal cart.

She moved quickly when she reached Shawn's room. She gathered the plates and placed them on the cart before pulling off her gloves and wiping her hands clean with tissues.

Only then did she open the cabinet to retrieve the jewelry bag and place it on the coffee table in the living room.

Shawn was sitting on the couch. He glanced at the jewelry bag on the table, then raised a hand to adjust the gold-rimmed glasses on his face.

He looked at her gently and asked, "You don't like the style?"

Tara shook her head. "I really do. But Mr. Wilhelm, the gift is too expensive. I can't accept it."

He murmured, "Too expensive?"

She nodded. "Even though I've been delivering your meals these past few days, I've already been paid extra. I really can't take something this valuable from you."

Shawn was quiet for a moment, then asked, "Did you look up the brand?"

Of course Tara wasn't going to drag Soren into this. She nodded. "I checked it on my phone. The price gave me a shock."

Tara was stunned. "Why not return it?"

Shawn chuckled lightly. "Since I bought it, there's no point sending it back."

It was as if the few-hundred-thousand-dollar necklace on the table was naturally destined for the trash when she refused it.

Tara stared at the necklace in disbelief, feeling like she had committed a crime. He was just going to toss a necklace that was worth over a million dollars?

Shawn had her completely in check. "So, you might as well take it. It really suits you."

Later, she found herself standing at Shawn's door again, the jewelry bag still in her hand.
