Tara couldn't just ask the other housekeepers if they wanted to swap spots with her because doing so could lead to a misunderstanding.
She had no choice but to take the spot behind Lance's and wait for him to come downstairs for dinner.
Soren was the first to reach the dining room, and when he saw Tara standing behind Lance's chair, he narrowed his eyes slightly in displeasure.
He strode over to Lance's seat and sat down on the chair.
Bewildered, Tara wondered if Soren and Lance had changed seating positions. At the same time, Soren seemed to have guessed the look on Tara's face because the corners of his lips lifted slightly into a smile.
Soren took the seat as if it was nothing strange, so Tara didn't think much about it. After all, he was her employer. He could sit wherever he pleased.
She heaved a small sigh of relief because serving Soren dinner was much better than serving Lance.
Hailey stood behind Soren's original seat all the while. She watched as he sat at Lance's side of the table, and then she glanced at Tara, who looked confused.
Hailey's heart broke a little after seeing what Soren did. Having a crush on him meant that she couldn't bear seeing him get anywhere near any woman. Although Hailey was aware of the fact that he had no feelings for her, she couldn't help but hang on to the notion of hope. What if he reciprocated her feelings?
Soon after, Shawn appeared in the doorway. He had just come downstairs from the studio on the second floor.
Even then, Jonah and Lance were nowhere to be seen. Tara wondered if they headed outside and still hadn't returned.
Her guess was proven right when Shawn gulped down his broth and told them, "Jonah and Lance aren't coming back for dinner. You two don't have to wait for them."
"Okay. Enjoy your meals, Mr. Wilhelm, Mr. Farrell," Hailey and the housekeeper said in unison.
Before leaving, Hailey took one last glance at Tara, her face a little gloomy. On the other hand, the new housekeeper seemed pretty glad, feeling as though she had just been given time off.
Fearing that he might cause her trouble, yet scared that his interest in her might deepen, Tara quickly changed the way she presented herself. "It's not that I don't. I just don't dare to," she said.
Hearing that, Soren turned around and gazed at her eyes with an indecipherable look. He went along with the flow by asking, "Oh? You don't dare to?"
Tara hastily replied, "Mr. Farrell, you're simply way too good for me. I don't deserve to even think of you." She wondered when Soren's interest in her would diminish.
When she was done speaking, she raised her eyes just in time to see the half-smile on his face. It was like he could read her thoughts.
She quickly looked away from him. It was difficult to read his mind, and she thought he was hard to deal with.
His tone was light when he spoke, but his smile gave her the creeps. He warned, "Tara, don't even think about pulling tricks on me. You'll regret it if you try to avoid me again."
He spoke calmly, yet each word chilled her to the bone.
