Raymond stood there.

Theodore looked over. When he saw that familiar roguish expression, his brow tightened. “Why are you barging in? Don’t you know we have honored guests?”

“Which honored guest?” Raymond played along and glanced inside. When he saw Eloise, the disgust and hostility on his face were impossible to hide. “What kind of honored guest is that?”

The thought of his sister, abused by this woman for years, sent a surge of reckless fury through him.

James grabbed his arm and looked at Theodore. “Dad, the police are here.”

“The police?” Both Theodore and Eloise looked stunned.

Eloise did not even bother scolding Raymond for his tone. What kind of occasion was this? No matter how serious the matter, the police should not appear here without notice. That would be a slap in the face to the Huttons and a public slight to Albus.

Behind her back, Megan’s hands began to shake. She looked up and met Raymond’s hateful, almost amused gaze. Her heart sank.

Before she could react, the police strode in. They addressed Theodore first, their tone apologetic. “Mr. Hutton, we are sorry. This involves a life-or-death case. We had no choice.”

Theodore frowned. “Which guest is involved?”

“It is…” The officer hesitated, then looked to the side. “Ms. Hutton.”

The door stood wide open, so the nearby guests heard every word. Expressions shifted across their faces, and low whispers spread.

“What does that mean? Did the Hutton family’s third daughter kill someone?”

“No way…”

Another voice dropped lower. “Wasn’t Madam Sterling here to discuss her marriage with Mr. Sterling? If she really killed someone, the Sterlings can’t be unaware.”

‘Poisoning!’ Theodore stared at Megan in disbelief.

She shook her head, eyes wide and innocent.

He turned back to the officer, his voice sharp. “Impossible. You must have made a mistake. Do you know how damaging it is to speak so irresponsibly in front of so many people? This could ruin a young woman’s reputation.

Everyone present was a prominent figure from Jouleston and Brimcrest. Members of the Sterling family were there as well.

If this scene unfolded as it was, Megan’s long-cherished marriage would be finished. From then on, marrying into a family of equal standing would be nearly impossible. No one would want their son to marry such a cruel

His face hardened further. He looked at James. “Where is your sister? Call her over.”
