Florence looked at her daughter's calm expression, and her heart ached more than she could bear.

"All right, as long as you know what you're doing." Florence sighed and chose not to press the matter. "Take things one step at a time from here on."

Just as the conversation ended, the sound of a car engine drifted in from outside. Out of habit, Diana glanced toward the floor-to-ceiling window, and her brow furrowed slightly.

A black sedan pulled up to the courtyard gate. A man in a sharp suit stepped out of the driver's seat carrying several gift bags.

It was Leon.

Florence saw him as well, and her expression darkened slightly. "Why is he here?"

Diana walked to the door and watched Leon approach at an unhurried pace. "Why are you here?"

Leon's tone was casual. "There's a new project in Jouleston. I'll be around for a while, so I figured I'd come see my mother-in-law first."

The moment Diana heard those last words, her expression turned cold.

"Leon, we've already submitted the divorce agreement." Her voice was icy as she corrected him. "Watch what you call her."

Leon's grip on the gift bags tightened for a moment. He fell silent for two seconds before saying, "That'll have to wait until we get the divorce papers, won't it?"

The implication was obvious. Until the divorce cooling-off period ended, they were still legally married, and he could still call Florence his mother-in-law.

Anger flickered through Diana. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, Florence's voice came from the living room.

"Is that Leon? Come in and sit down."
