The hospital. Jade White's foot had been pierced deeply by a nail. By the time her wound was cleaned and she received a tetanus shot, it was past one in the morning.

"I'm fine now, thank you," Jade murmured, sitting on the bench.

Clayton Holloway said nothing, merely looking at her with a heavy gaze. "Don't you have anything to say?"

Old Jade would have raged and blamed Susanna. But now, she said nothing. She knew even with proof, Clayton wouldn't do anything to Susanna.

"There's nothing to say. I wasn't looking and accidentally stepped on it," Jade lowered her head, not daring to meet his eyes. She brought this upon herself.

"Let's go back." Seeing Clayton remain silent, Jade pushed herself up from the bench, intending to limp outside.

Clayton didn't say a word. He stepped forward and swept her into his arms, carrying her toward the exit.

Jade froze, her heart racing and a deep blush creeping up her neck. She had been in love with Clayton since she first saw him at the White family estate, though she never wanted to admit it...

Later, Clayton had treated her like a plague, let alone initiated any physical contact.

"I... I can walk," Jade stammered, wanting to pull away. He was a notorious germaphobe, after all.

Clayton ignored her protests. He placed her in the passenger seat, buckled her in, and drove them home.

It was one-thirty when they arrived. The living room lights were blazing. Susanna sat on the sofa, visibly panicked. She had only meant to teach Jade a lesson, never expecting Clayton to actually take her to the hospital. Her plan had completely backfired.

The door opened. Susanna was about to strike first with a fabricated excuse, but she froze when she saw Clayton carrying Jade inside.

Shock rooted her to the spot. Clayton was a germaphobe; he never let anyone get this close. He had never even held her like that...

Susanna balled her hands into fists and forced a look of surprise. "Clayton, where did you two go? What happened to Jade's foot?"

Jade remained silent, her face flushed. Clayton didn't offer Susanna an explanation either. He simply carried Jade to her bedroom and laid her on the mattress.
