Forced onto sick leave, Jade limped toward the building exit, only to be blocked by Susanna at the front doors.

Assuming Jade had been fired, Susanna gloated openly. "I told you, Jade. You can't beat me. You could never compete with the childhood bond Clayton and I share."

Jade let out a bitter laugh. "Childhood bond? Are you lost in your own delusion? Do you even know what you are? You're a cheap knockoff parading around like the real deal. Take a look in the mirror."

Jade shoved past her and continued toward the exit.

"Who do you think you are?" Susanna shrieked. "We're exactly the same! Weren't you addicted to playing the wealthy heiress? You're nothing but trash from the slums. You stole someone else's life for years and actually convinced yourself you belonged to the White family!"

Seeing Jade's face darken, Susanna twisted the knife. "Did you forget? Your father was a piece of garbage picked up from an alley. He wasn't even a recognized illegitimate child. That makes you nothing but dirt. You belong in the gutter, completely trampled on..."

Smack! Jade finally snapped. She stepped forward and slapped Susanna hard across the face.

She might have lost her status, but after two decades of playing the arrogant heiress, she hadn't forgotten how to fight back. Provoked, her instincts took over. She was trembling all over.
