Watching alone wasn't thrilling enough, so he decided to drag a buddy into the mix. "Hey, Gavin, come over to Jupiter's house! He and Mars are in the middle of a bloodbath on the chessboard."

Gavin called up two more neighbors, and since everyone loved a good showdown, they all headed over together.

Back in the study, Abby's crippling anxiety had eased after a solid hour of talking with her daughter. The frantic desperation had faded.

"Your father isn't entirely wrong. I've been a little too stubborn lately," Abby admitted, reflecting on her behavior.

Jupiter's wonderful daughter smiled playfully. "It's called karma! In the first half of your lives, he was the stubborn one driving you crazy. In the second half, it's your turn to be stubborn and drive him up the wall. Let him experience how furious he used to make you when he was younger."

Abby closed the heavy business books that clearly didn't suit her and stood up. "I'm going to tidy up the living room, take a shower, and get to bed early."

"Mom, don't forget to use the skincare I bought you before you sleep," Milka reminded her. "I'm almost out of mine, and you still have half a bottle left."

"I used it! But your father told me it looked like I was slathering glue all over my face."

The mother and daughter laughed as they stepped out of the study, fully intending to clean the living room. Instead, they froze, staring at the six extra men who had mysteriously materialized in their house.

Sometime during their heart-to-heart, the crowd of spectators had grown.

"Oh, hey, Abby! Milka! You're both home," the Chief of Staff greeted them casually.

The two men at the chessboard turned their heads. "Getting tired?" Jupiter asked. "We'll wrap this up soon."

The Chief of Staff immediately objected. "Don't stop now! We aren't done watching. You've got Mars boxed into three different corners. We're all waiting to see him squirm."

Mars shot him a look. "Chief, keep talking like that, and I'll be the first to commit treason during our next exercise."

Gavin analyzed the board. "Mars hasn't necessarily lost. This kid never shows his true hand. Who knows where he's hiding a trap?"
