She wiped her tears away and said, “Let’s go, Layna. Take me there.”

“Mom, you can’t go looking like this,” Layna said, grabbing her arm. “If you show up all upset, you’ll look like you’ve already lost. You’re Uncle Scott’s wife. The woman outside is just a side piece. Walk in there like you own the place.”

Layna was frustrated—sometimes it felt like she had more backbone than her mom.

Juliana blinked, lost for a second. “You’re right. I can’t let that woman look down on me. I’ll change first.”

She went upstairs, took a long shower, and slipped into a bold red dress. Her makeup was flawless, every detail in place.

Once she was put together, Juliana drove with Layna, following her directions to the apartment complex where Sandy was living.

“This is my son’s apartment. Why can’t I be here?” Mrs. Goad looked just as surprised to see Juliana. Her face darkened, instantly on guard. “What do you want? Get out.”

She tried to slam the door in Juliana’s face.

“Auntie, those buns you made are delicious…” Sandy came downstairs, wearing slippers and a loose house dress.
