“Sandy?” Carter raised an eyebrow. “Man, you really don’t keep up with the gossip, do you? We’ve been talking for ages and you still got her name wrong. Scott’s girlfriend is Sandia, not Sandy. Honestly, aside from Anastasia, do you just see everyone as either a guy or your wife?”

Before Carter could finish, Scott cut in, “No, her name actually is Sandy. Not Sandia.”

Carter blinked. Did he have it wrong?

While he was still puzzling it out, Scott dropped a bomb, “Sandy and Anastasia are half-sisters. Same dad, different moms.”

Carter turned to Herman, wide-eyed. “Wait, Scott’s girlfriend is your sister-in-law?”

Herman, as cool as ever, corrected him, “She’s just my wife’s half-sister.”

Translation: Don’t even think about calling her family.

Even with just that one sentence, it was obvious how little Herman cared for Sandy. Being half-sisters was awkward enough—add in the fact that they barely knew each other, and there was no closeness at all. Sandy wasn’t Anastasia’s real sister, so naturally, Herman kept his distance.

Carter scratched his head, even more confused than before. “Then how did Sandy turn into Sandia? Scott, what’s the story here?”

Scott sat there, hands clasped, staring at the table. “Sandy didn’t have much of a choice. Juliana sent her to spy on me, but Sandy didn’t want any part of Juliana’s schemes. She just needed a job, so she worked at my company. She’s smart, kind, always looking out for others, so…”

“So you fell for her, huh?” Carter tried to talk some sense into him. “Look, man, think this through. Divorce isn’t something you just jump into. If you like her, keep it on the down low. Why turn it into a circus?”

Carter clearly wasn’t a fan of Scott’s decisions. They were way too old to be acting like lovestruck teenagers.

From Scott’s short explanation, Herman could tell Sandy had come into Scott’s life with a plan. But if you’re smart, you don’t call that out now—Scott was too far gone to hear it anyway.

Herman wasn’t about to play the bad guy here.

Scott frowned, then looked up at Herman and Carter, his voice steady. “I’ve made up my mind, so don’t bother trying to talk me out of it. Things with Juliana are past fixing. Herman, now I get why you went all in for Anastasia. When you love someone, you just want to give her everything, make her feel safe.”
