She knew she couldn’t control Darin anymore, not the way she used to.

“Darin, even if you’re upset with your stepfather, Allen is still your brother.”

Darin stood up, his voice icy. “I only have a sister. I don’t have a brother.”

“Darin!”

“I have work to do at the office. I’m leaving.” He was already heading for the door as he spoke.

Yvonne watched him walk away, her face tight with frustration.

By three in the afternoon, the car rolled into the parking lot of the villa on the hillside.

The higher they drove, the cooler the air felt. The mountain weather was nothing like the blazing sun down below, and the breeze was a relief.

Anne jumped out of the car, eager to fly her kite.

The whole afternoon was spent in the yard. Felicia and Max took turns playing with Anne, letting her run around and laugh.

“Daddy, can you help me fly it?” Anne asked, holding up her kite.

Max got it soaring in the breeze. Anne cheered, her voice full of joy. “Evelynn, look! The little bunny is flying so high!”

Felicia looked up at the kite dancing in the sky, then down at Anne’s happy face, and she couldn’t help but smile too.

Anne ran over, reaching for the reel in her father’s hands. “Daddy, I want to try.”

Max bent down, passing Anne the handle. He covered her hands with his, guiding her gently.

Felicia stood a little ways back, quietly soaking in the warmth between father and daughter. The way Max looked at Anne was always so patient, so loving.

It was the kind of gentle moment she could only watch from a distance.

When Anne finally had the kite string steady, Max stood up straight. His eyes met Felicia’s for a second.

Their gazes held, just for a moment.

Felicia snapped out of it quickly, looking away.

“No, not yet.”

Luke didn’t ask any more questions. They chatted a bit, then hung up.

Felicia set her phone down.

When she turned around, she saw Max standing right behind her. She hadn’t even heard him come in.

She jumped, her tone sharp. “Why are you standing behind me like that?”

Max’s voice was calm, almost cold. “Why are you acting so guilty? Did you do something you shouldn’t have?”

His self-righteousness made her blood boil. “Max, you have no right to ask me that. Who’s the one actually in the wrong here?”

Max stepped toward her. Felicia backed away, but he closed the space between them, pinning her gently but firmly against the window.

He braced one hand on the glass next to her head, his eyes locked on hers. His voice was low, almost a growl. “There are things I can do that you can’t.”
