Everyone in the lobby watched the scene unfold. Shannon already knew what was going on, but Adrian was clueless. Even so, watching everything unfold, he started to put it together. His son had feelings for a married woman. His brow creased as he looked at Jeremy, his tone suddenly sharp. “Jeremy.”

Jeremy's arm froze, and he pulled his hand back. But then, in a blink, Max reached for Felicia, prying her fingers apart and squeezing her hand tight. Felicia snapped back to the moment and tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let go.

The man spoke up. “We’ll head out now. Anne, say goodbye to everyone.”

Anne waved at the elders, giggling. The three of them left together, and Shannon and Heather both turned to stare at Jeremy. Adrian broke the silence. “That’s enough. Let’s go home.”

Felicia climbed into Max’s car, holding Anne on her lap in the passenger seat. Anne’s little face was all curiosity, but there was this bright, bubbling excitement she couldn’t hide. “Is Evelynn really my mommy?”

Max glanced over at Felicia. She looked stiff, lost in her own thoughts. The question from Anne hit Felicia right in the heart. Her eyes started to sting, and she just hugged Anne closer instead of answering.

Anne leaned into her, blinking up at her with those big, wondering eyes. “Mommy, why aren’t you saying anything?”

Felicia managed to say, “We’ll talk when we’re home.”

She honestly had no idea what to say. Everything inside her felt tangled and heavy. She and Max still weren’t divorced. She wasn’t ready for Anne to know the truth.

Anne stayed quiet and nestled in closer, just holding on.

The drive back to the villa was quiet. Anne drifted off for a while, but woke up when they arrived. Max carried her inside with Felicia following just behind. He handed Anne to the nanny.

Felicia turned to Max. “Max, what are you trying to do?”

Max stood in front of her, his face unreadable, his presence almost suffocating. “Felicia, you can keep denying it, but I told you before. You’re Anne’s mother. That’s all you’ll ever be.”

Felicia’s hands clenched. She let out a cold laugh. “So why didn’t you care before that Anne didn’t have a mother? You were so eager to find her a stepmom. Now you suddenly care? Isn’t that ridiculous, Max?”

Max stepped closer, making her back up. She kept retreating until her back pressed up against the big window.

He put his hand against the glass right above her head, boxing her in. His whole body radiated that intense, dangerous energy. His eyes were so dark, and there was something cold swirling in them as he looked down at her.
