Felicia stared at Max, her eyes wide and unblinking.

The room was so quiet, it was like the air itself had frozen. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Felicia broke the silence, her voice steady but cold. “So, Max, you get to do whatever you want, and I just have to go along with it?”

Max let out a slow breath. He pulled his hand back, straightening his posture as he looked down at her. His eyes were dark, edged with frost. “When you chose to marry me and have Anne, you should have known this isn’t just your life anymore.”

Felicia’s hands curled into tight fists. She took a breath, looking up at him. “Falling in love with you was the dumbest thing I’ve ever done. I loved you, so I let you walk all over me five years ago. I know I let Anne down. She’s my responsibility. But I won’t allow you to use her to control me.”

Max’s eyes narrowed, his gaze sharp.

A faint, unreadable smile tugged at his lips. “You’re a lot tougher than you were five years ago, Felicia, but that’s still not enough.”

“Don’t push me, Max.”

He just gave a little laugh. “You should focus on making up for the five years you missed with Anne.”

He turned and walked upstairs, not looking back.

Felicia stood there, watching him go until he was out of sight.

Her knees felt weak. She moved to the sofa and sank down, leaning forward and threading her hands through her hair.

She felt completely drained, every part of her aching.

Then she heard Anne’s voice.

“Mommy, Mommy.”

Felicia wiped her tears and tried to smile as Anne came running down the stairs.

Anne flung herself into Felicia’s arms, snuggling close. “Mommy, do I smell nice?”

Felicia smiled softly. “Anne, you’re the sweetest little girl ever.”

“Why are you crying, Mommy? Did I do something bad?”

Felicia wiped her face quickly. “No, honey, you’re perfect. You’re the best kid in the world.”

“Then Daddy must have made you sad. I’ll go tell Daddy off.”

Anne puffed up with determination and tried to wriggle out of Felicia’s arms, ready to run upstairs.

“Anne!”

Felicia caught her just as Max appeared on the second floor, now dressed in clean pajamas, looking calm and composed as he came downstairs.

Anne spotted him. She put her hands on her hips, giving him her fiercest glare.

She climbed onto the sofa to make herself taller, cheeks puffed out in a cute, angry pout. When Max approached, she stood her ground. “Daddy, you have to apologize to Mommy!”
