"Okay, I'll go with you."

After lunch, Luke drove Felicia to her office. She dove straight into her work, while Luke found a seat in the lounge and kept quietly out of her way.

A little while later, his phone started to vibrate. Luke glanced at the caller ID and his expression shifted, tension flickering across his face. He watched the screen in silence, waiting until the ringing nearly stopped before finally picking up. His voice was cool and distant. "Max."

Max sounded as calm as ever. "Luke, what brings you to New York?"

"Just some work I had to deal with," Luke replied, not offering any more.

"Is everything taken care of?" Max asked. His tone was casual, almost like an older relative checking in.

"Almost."

"Where are you two staying?"

Luke didn’t answer the question. "Max, did you need something?"

There was a pause, then Max said, "Nothing really. Just finish up and come home soon." He ended the call without another word.

Luke set his phone down and stared at the blank screen.

Felicia walked in just then, catching him lost in thought. "What are you looking at?"

Luke shook off whatever was on his mind and managed a smile. "Nothing."

She handed him a small box of pastries. "I picked these up on my way. Give them a try."

Luke opened the box and took a bite. "It’s actually pretty good."

The next couple of days passed quietly. Felicia stuck to her usual routine, and the strange encounter with Holden started to feel unreal, like something she'd imagined. Max hadn’t reached out either. It was only now, thinking back, that she realized Holden and Max actually knew each other, though she had no idea how close they were.

Back home, she and Max’s connection was really just through Anne. Here in New York, they were like strangers. Oddly enough, that thought made her feel lighter, as if a weight had been lifted.

"If you’re confident, then okay."

Felicia mentioned running into Holden. Jeremy was caught off guard. That was the whole reason he’d come—he’d heard Holden had been released on bail and rushed over, but he hadn’t known Felicia had already seen him.

"It’s fine now," Felicia assured him. "I just want to finish up things with Northstar Dynamics and then head home."

"Alright," Jeremy said.

After they hung up, Felicia arrived at the office. The receptionist greeted her with a polite smile. "Good morning, Evelynn."

"Good morning," Felicia replied.

The receptionist added, "Evelynn, there are visitors here from Horizon Peak Energy."

Felicia froze in place.
