Jamison froze for a second, not understanding at first. Then his eyes focused on the paper she was holding. The word "Pregnant" lit up his world like a firework.
A wide grin spread across his face. "What does this mean? You're pregnant?" he asked in disbelief.
"It's right there in black and white. Can't you read?" Ivy took the report back and glanced at it again herself. "It says it clearly, right here. Five weeks pregnant."
Jamison just stared at her, speechless.
Ivy waved a hand in front of his face. "Hello? Did you hear me? I'm pregnant again. Our baby came back! Right here in my belly."
Jamison's gaze slowly drifted down to her abdomen, lingering there for a moment before returning to her face. His deep eyes overflowed with joy and excitement. He moved his lips several times before any sound came out. "Are you serious? You're not joking?"
"Who would joke about this?" Ivy said, watching his dazed expression, which was exactly what she had expected. "I've been feeling off for the past few days—no appetite, tired all the time. At first, I thought my period was coming, but it never did... Then today, it suddenly occurred to me that I might be pregnant, so I went and got tested."
Jamison wasn't really listening to what she was saying. He snatched the lab report from her and stared at it, reading it over and over again.
"This is so fast. I thought... we wouldn't have another chance... so fast," he mumbled, his words tumbling out incoherently. He looked up at his wife, smiling like a child.
"I wouldn't have been. I would accept any outcome, but I'm even happier to accept this one!" Jamison reassured her. He patted the side of the bed and held out his hand. "Come, get closer. I want to feel the baby."
Ivy stepped forward and sat on the edge of the bed. Jamison gently placed his hand on her flat stomach, his eyes, full of laughter, meeting hers. Although he was a man in his thirties, his joyful expression was as pure and radiant as a boy's. In the past, Jamison had never been obsessed with having children; he'd wanted to enjoy a few more years of just the two of them. But after his illness, having a child had become his focus. He wanted to ensure his wife had a future, something of him to hold onto. And a child was undoubtedly the best way.
He had thought the chance was lost, but this wonderful surprise had come out of nowhere. Ivy watched his uncontainable excitement, and the gloom that had hung over them for days finally lifted. The arrival of this baby was like a ray of light chasing away the recent darkness.
Seeing him stroking her belly and murmuring, "This is so wonderful," Ivy couldn't help but laugh. "It's just an embryo right now. It might not even have a heartbeat yet. What can you possibly feel by touching it?"
