Both Hanna and Grace turned their eyes on me. Unsure how to react, I felt an urge to bolt. I stammered, "Well, I think... Both of you have valid points. Let time take its course."

While my words avoided favoring either perspective, the tension in the air was palpable.

Grace wiped her mouth, signaling that she was finished. Suddenly, she said, "David, I've always wanted to apologize to you. I'm sorry."

"For what?" I looked up in shock, nearly choking on my spaghetti.

"I didn't know Oskar had taken that letter from my desk at that time, but I want to apologize for not stopping him when he read it aloud. I never anticipated it would cause you so much trouble. I'm really sorry."

Grace's apology caught me off guard. I had held a grudge against her after that incident, thinking she might have teamed up with Oskar to humiliate me. But so much time had passed that my resentment had mostly faded. Now, I didn't really need her apology.

Waving my hand dismissively, I smiled. "It's all in the past. Don't mention it."

However, Grace looked serious. "The wounds may not hurt when they scab over, but the scars will always remain. I can't go back and change anything, but I'm willing to make it up to you for my ignorance."

"What do you mean?"

"I've reviewed your past performance reports. You're capable, but not motivated enough. I've already recommended you to the head office as a candidate for the new director position. With your abilities, you could really carve out your own path if you find the drive."
